Recent national data shows that middle school students continue to lag behind in academic recovery, with reading and math scores remaining stuck at post-pandemic lows even as younger elementary students show signs of bouncing back.

Building on the success of our Building Better Readers program helping elementary students, we are expanding to include older students.

Thank you to the more than 30 community members who attended today's tutor training program for middle grade struggling readers in 6th through 8th grade. Learn more about the program and becoming a volunteer at the link below, and note you can select times that work best for your schedule.

The Literacy Coalition is pleased to support the Palm Beach North community at the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce's Annual Back to School Breakfast, bringing business and education leaders together. PBC Superintendent Mike Burke provided remarks and was interveiwed by a student. We appreciated the celebration of the role our community can play in supporting students, educators, and schools throughout Palm Beach North. Literacy Coalition CEO Kristin Calder and Building Better Readers Manager Maria Soto were in attendance to share about our programs, efforts, events and volunteer opportunities available in the north county including:

The Coalition's Building Better Readers program complements teacher instruction and helps struggling readers improve their skills. We recruit, train and place volunteers to be reading tutors in more than 50 local schools, many in the north county including Jupiter, Jerry Thomas, Lake Park, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Allamanda, Lincoln and Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune.

The Literacy Coalition emphasizes the importance of early literacy development by providing a book to every baby born in a Palm Beach County hospital including at Jupiter Medical Center, and to infants in partner programs in Lake Park, Palm Beach Gardens and Riviera Beach. We partner with pediatricians in Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens who educate families about the importance of early literacy as they give away a book to each child during their wellness check-ups.

Literacy AmeriCorps serve with Take Stock In Children as graduation coaches helping students at Jupiter High School, Dwyer High School and PBG Community High School. Our Workplace & Community Education program is delivered at sites including Frenchman’s Creek Country Club and the The Gardens Mall.

Our Stories & STEM and Read! Lead! Succeed! programs are provided at Edna W. Runner Tutorial Center, Bridges of Lake Park and 20 more sites. Whether using a science based or social emotional learning curriculum, we feature high-quality children’s literature and activities to engage and teach children in afterschool and summer camp programs.

The Literacy Coalition is making an impact across Delray Beach and is proud to support the Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce Education Fund, recently attending their Back to School Breakfast. Thank you to Megan Bob, our Sr. Dir. of Programs, to Jeanne Siccone, our Children's Literacy Dir., and to our Delray partners and volunteers for all you do to support local students.

In Delray Beach, the Literacy Coalition provides programs at many locations including at Village Academy, also the site of our Village Readers Family Literacy program, to Banyan Creek, Orchard View, Pine Grove, Plumosa School of the Arts and S.D. Spady, where we’re helping students build stronger reading skills through Building Better Readers and Literacy AmeriCorps.

We also provide books through local pediatric partners, including Mission Medical Center and Pediatrica of Delray, putting books directly into children’s hands and providing support for early literacy development. Have a great school year, Delray Beach!

The Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County is grateful to all the supporters of the 14th Annual Town of Palm Beach United Way School Supply Drive. We appreciate our partnership with the Town of Palm Beach United Way and their support of our mission to help promote and achieve literacy from infancy to adulthood. The school supplies are a big help for children and adults in our literacy programs. We wish all students a successful school year!

With funds from CSC, we have been able to support early literacy by providing books to families where they are - from the very beginning in the birthing centers, through home visiting programs, to their pediatrician's office. We are able to help families give their kids the skills they need to succeed at school and beyond. Thank you, CSC! 📚💙
