Join us for a virtual conversation with Tom Dwyer, President and Executive Director of A Faith That Does Justice, as he reflects on our first 10 years, shares his vision for the future, and responds to your questions and ideas.

Tom will speak about how we’re building on our late Founder, Father Peter Gyves, SJ, MD’s legacy—taking a proactive approach to advocacy in response to the urgent needs in our nation and communities. You’ll also hear about our on-the-ground work, from social justice mindfulness to our direct service programs, and how people of faith can stand up against tyranny with empathy, love, and kindness.

On a January morning when the wind chill hit -11°F, a small team of AFTDJ volunteers gathered in the basement kitchen of Mission Church because hunger doesn’t take a snow day.

For Eileen, who travels in from the suburbs, it’s simple: “I feel compelled to do this.”

For Gene, what began as curiosity became a calling: “This changes you. You can’t do this and not have it change you.”

What starts as making a sandwich or writing a check becomes something deeper: a spiritual encounter, a moral commitment, a gift that brings hope.

These are just a few of the messages we’ve received from ESOL students whose lives are being transformed through language, community, and confidence.

Our moment this week celebrates the thousands of hours our volunteers have poured into teaching, and the courage of our students who continue to show up, learn, and grow.

Learning English is about so much more than grammar and vocabulary. It’s about feeling truly at home in a new country.

Eight years ago, we launched our volunteer-led ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) program to walk in solidarity with immigrants in Boston. Today, we’re in our 27th class cycle, running 7 classes at once — our largest ever — with growing online options that now reach students beyond Boston.

In 2025 alone, we’ve served 180 adult students, and 1,039 students since the program began. Along the way, volunteers have quietly stepped in with coats on freezing days, umbrellas in the rain, and lunch programs when students needed a mid-day meal.

Our goal isn’t just to teach English, it’s to welcome our neighbors to their new home.

In Boston’s urban core, neighbors are facing rising food costs and cuts to safety net programs. Our response? Expanding our food assistance Grab –& Go program to meet people where they are.

Twice a week – at two different locations - volunteers pack and distribute nutritious meals, and in the winter, warm hats, gloves, coats, and socks. This program offers more than food, it provides dignity, compassion, and a friendly face.

In 2025 alone, we distributed 3,885 meals. Since the program began, that number has grown to 5,858 meals shared with our community.
