April is Autism Acceptance Month.
As healthcare providers, this is an important time to expand conversations around whole-patient care โ including the connection between airway health, sleep quality, and neurodevelopment.
Many children with autism experience sleep-related breathing disorders, mouth breathing, and disrupted sleep patterns that may impact behavior, learning, and overall health.
Dentists and healthcare professionals are uniquely positioned to recognize airway concerns early and help guide families toward supportive care.
Improving sleep and airway health can help support better outcomes, better regulation, and better quality of life.

This is a fascinating kinetic demonstration by artist Roos van Geffen, created after researching with scientists how stress and emotions accumulate and process in the body.
For the ๐ฆ๐น๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฝ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐๐ฎ๐ community, this visual hits home. We know that bruxism (teeth grinding) is often a "red flag" for sleep disorders and a compromised airway. The physical toll is real:
๐น Severe tooth wear
๐น Fractured teeth
๐น Chronic jaw pain
๐น Morning headaches
The video speaks for itself. Imagine this being your actual teeth, not plaster. It happens every single night for millions of people.

This is one of the many reasons why we train doctors at The Vivos Institute how to integrate Sleep and Airway into their practice. Good sleep matters! How many dentists are screening for sleep apnea?
Interrupted sleep slows down the brains cleaning waves that remove toxins, study shows.
The brain has its own cleaning system that works most efficiently during sleep. This system uses waves of cerebrospinal fluid to move through brain tissue and flush out metabolic waste that builds up while we are awake. These waste products include proteins and byproducts of normal brain activity that can become harmful if they accumulate. Deep, stable sleep appears to create the right conditions for this fluid movement, allowing brain cells to shrink slightly and open pathways for efficient clearance.
When sleep is short, fragmented, or repeatedly interrupted, this process may be disrupted. Research suggests that disturbed sleep reduces the flow of cerebrospinal fluid through the brain, slowing the removal of waste. As a result, substances that should normally be cleared overnight may linger longer in brain tissue. Over time, this reduced clearance could contribute to inflammation and increase vulnerability to conditions associated with toxic protein buildup, particularly with long term sleep disruption.
These findings do not mean that a few bad nights of sleep will immediately harm the brain. However, they highlight sleep as an active biological process rather than passive rest. Chronic sleep disruption may gradually interfere with the brainโs ability to maintain a clean internal environment. More human focused research is needed to understand how strongly this mechanism contributes to cognitive decline and whether improving sleep consistency can restore normal waste clearance.
