A TOAST to CHANGE... the industry and economy has changed and we are changing too...

As I write this post, I have been running a low grade fever the last few days and have general body achiness, slight headache and general fatigue. I experienced a couple days of fatigue and lack of sleep leading up to this and some really slight labored breathing a couple nights ago depending on what position I was lying in. No, I have not been tested or diagnosed as of this writing, but I don’t normally get sick like this at this time of year either. Besides grocery shopping I haven’t been around the public for over a week other than a lunch with only 3 tables of two people each well spread out in a huge restaurant over a week ago. I have an 88 year old father who lives with us and needs daily assistance so suffice to say the situation is a little stressed more so because it is hard to keep any distancing when you need to perform many daily functions around and for others.

I know what everyone is thinking… but I am hopeful it is just a short “thing” and like many of you feel “let’s just get this over with”, but without further testing who knows. Unfortunately, the diagnosis is only to keep you from spreading the problem, that will likely eventually pass and leave little affects but it is that thought you have right now as you read this that is the problem with the industry and the general economy; the paralysis that comes with fear of getting sick right now. It is causing most people to hunker down and not go to gyms, restaurants, movie theaters, bars, concerts... After having been in a government mandated shut-down for almost half the year, even as the government allows us and these other industries to open, the paralysis and the many options available to everyone has pushed people to alternatives.

Although not all bad, some of those changes are actually an improvement in how we spend our time and the quality of our lives.

All of the above is a microcosm of how many of our clients feel in general about being out in crowded areas at this time. They may not fear it, but if they can avoid it they will and prioritize the most important essentials for their lifestyle. Many things don’t kill you, but being sick sucks and takes away from the gains and productivity of your life in general. In addition, nobody wants to be responsible for hastening the little time some others around us have left if it can be avoided.

But that all being said, changes can sometimes be positive and can open our eyes to what may have been negative or wasted energy better put to use elsewhere.

Although 2020 has been a tough year for everyone it’s been particularly devastating for gym owners in Arizona that have been essentially shut down since March. No membership revenue for almost 6 months is more weight than most business can sustain but given the state of Arizona’s last executive order on how we could open, and the general population sentiment about returning to normal activities, we no longer believe there is a business model we can make work at least for the foreseeable future or remainder of this year. So we are looking at change as well.

You may not be aware but gyms in Maricopa county are allowed to open at 25% capacity, 6 feet of distancing and the wearing of masks while training. At least 30-40% of what we do is grappling (wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) which cannot be performed with 6 feet of distancing. Most of the rest is kickboxing which requires high intensity cardio work and is very difficult to sustain not to mention dangerous with a mask on. The state has said that any activity requiring high intensity work making it hard to breath through a mask should not be performed at this time. Clients would tend to agree that a mask is suboptimal for kickboxing. Even the strength and conditioning work is difficult for us to perform safely as that room is much smaller at about 1/6 of the facility and difficult to distance properly as we don’t use machines such as an EOS or Mountainside Fitness. In short, the governments regulations at this time make it impossible for us to operate properly or profitably legally.

We have been asked about and we are aware there are and have been gym and martial art schools operating against state laws to survive and we wish them and their clients well but we intend to follow the law as it is currently being written and interpreted during the Covid pandemic.

The Pandemic has changed this industry and we realize it may not come back anytime soon if ever and we aren’t going to be able to salvage the economic model we originally created for our business. As such, like many of you, we are going to be evolving with it and leaving the combat training model behind and transitioning into our health and fitness assessment and technology business full-time.

We have another entity, Six Sigma Fitness LLC (sixsigfit.com) that is in the health assessment and software technology business that we will be giving 100% of our effort to. We hope to have more news regarding that business and UltraFit’s Clinical Assessment Programs in the near future, but we won’t be actively training inside of a traditional brick and mortar structure anymore. We appreciate the UltraFit family we cultivated and will continue to be active here and in the Cloud in the future. So here’s to evolving…

Are we reopening? No... I know other gyms have made statements that they can now reopen, but in Maricopa County that would be wrong and they open themselves to fines and liability. The county must meet 3 key Coronavirus statistics before gyms are allowed to "apply" for reopening and from our analysis it may take a couple weeks before our County meets those tests. With schools opening at the same time, we could see the stats go back up and gyms closed down again. In addition, the law as written only allows us to train with masks at 25% of capacity once we reopen. If you train at a globo-Big-Box gym on their weight machines, this likely won't be a problem because you really aren't training very hard. 15 reps, rest for 2 minutes and browse instagram, rinse and repeat. Never take a big breath and never raise your heart rate. Masks are hard to use in BJJ and Kickboxing and likely won't be tolerated well despite the ninja's ability to wear them while fighting. In our modern day environment, we are not as disciplined and tough as a Ninja and even a Ninja had to start as a beginner, and they couldn't wear a mask right out of the box either.

It is a very sad time for health and fitness business owners. It is bad for you as well, but you have to find options at home, don't let this virus take your health and fitness from you just because you can't attend a gym. Keep moving and stay active you don't need a gym for that.

Why are other gyms saying they are opening? You would have to ask them, but some don't understand the Governor's Executive Orders and the Judge's ruling. Some just don't like it and are rebelling against the status quo. Others have nothing to lose as they carry no insurance and don't have any significant assets so they figure there is no risk but they would be wrong. So suffice to say that we have nothing to report for likely a week or two at this point. Keep moving and don't give up...

Redefining the feeling you get on Xmas morning when you find out Santa Clause dropped off gifts...

What are we doing different? First of all we never laid off our cleaning crews. Both companies were cleaning the entire 2 months we have been closed on their regular schedule. We felt that small independent contractors needed our support during this time and we wanted them to be there when we reopened. We already have the cleanest fitness and martial art facility in Scottsdale and it is as clean as ever. But that being said we are continually bringing our game to new levels and putting in more policies and procedures to keep you as safe as possible. We will only succeed with our client support and help to implement revised procedures. So here we go!

1. Please reserve your spot online and check in on your app when you arrive so we can control spacing requirement guidelines
2. If you have cold or allergy symptoms, are coughing or not feeling well please do not come to the gym. If you have been exposed to Covid 19 please quarantine at home for 14 days.
3. Make sure your coach takes your temperature upon entering the gym. This is touch-less and takes 2 seconds.
4. Use sanitizer and wash your hands when you arrive, and again prior to leaving.
5. Avoid sharing equipment.
6. All workout stations should be at least 6 feet apart in each direction.
7. Please wipe down everything you use. There are currently 2 spray bottles of disinfectant, one on the far front heavy bag shelf and one on the floor in the weight-room. We have some bleach wipes to start as well and more supplies are on order and awaiting arrival.
8. Bring your own water bottle or towels as needed.
9. Leave all extra gear in your car
10. You may use metal benches to prepare and change shoes... but your equipment, purses, wallets, bags and shoes need to be placed on the black shelves at the front of the mats and should not be in the seating area. All equipment left up front will be moved. Similarly, no personal effects should be on the chairs or benches or the plyo boxes. Black leather chairs should remain empty and only used for temporary seating.
11. Try to have bleach wipes and sanitizer with you for your personal gear as supplies are difficult to source at this time.
12. Do not wrap, tape or add any cloth-based products to any of the metal surfaces such as barbells, pull-up bars, dip bars or handles. All metal surfaces should remain accessible for cleaning at all times.
13. Do not leave any apparel or personal equipment such as wraps to dry-out in the facility, they will be disposed of immediately.
14. Male clients must keep their shirts on during training. Please change in the bathrooms as appropriate or in your car and do not leave any apparel in offices, chairs, doors...
15. Masks are optional for clients and coaches. Breathing through a mask while exercising can potentially do more harm, proceed with caution if you do so.
16. If you are above the age of 60, have underlying health issues or are extremely overweight, exposure to Covid-19 can be extremely risky and it isn't advised that you be in the gym or group setting at this time.

What's your attitude right now? F'-it, bring it on. If I am going to get the virus let's get it over with - let's workout, strike, roll and train and get on with life. We don't need to make any changes... or maybe let's take some precautions, move slowly, see if we can wait out the curve, get some medical therapies or solutions in place first... got to make sure I don't take something home or give it to others... ??
