LSU Health Shreveport is proud to be one of only eight pilot sites for the National Disaster Medical System – a federal initiative focused on strengthening the nation’s medical readiness during catastrophic events. The work completed by LSU Health Shreveport through this program will help inform future disaster response strategies for our nation.
This week we were excited to host Commander Eugene Smith, FACGE, MSC, Director of the NDMS Program as part of a site visit. We’re incredibly proud of the work done by the NDMS Pilot Site team under the direction of John Vanchiere, MD, PhD, Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Research and Program Director for the LSUHS NDMS Pilot Site.
“Our community has become a laboratory for identifying and testing new strategies before they move to a national level,” Vanchiere said. “That’s something people in Louisiana should be proud of.”

Last week, we shared the exciting news about an $11 million COBRE Phase 2 Grant that provides five more years of support for the Center for Applied Immunology and Pathological Processes (CAIPP) at LSU Health Shreveport. But, what exactly is a COBRE, and how do they change research careers at LSU Health Shreveport?

With two active COBRE Programs - the Center for Redox Biology & Cardiovascular Disease and the Center for Applied Immunology and Pathological Processes— LSUHS is advancing research, while supporting our researchers. Through access to advanced core facilities, vital research funding, and hands-on mentorship, COBRE supports early-career scientists as they develop independent research programs, secure major NIH grants, and tackle some of the most pressing health challenges of our time.

Please help us congratulate Andrew Yurochko, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, on an $11 million COBRE Phase 2 Grant that provides five more years of support for the Center for Applied Immunology and Pathological Processes (CAIPP.) One of two Centers of Biomedical Excellence (COBRE) at LSUHS, the CAIPP supports researchers at LSU Health Shreveport through access to advanced core facilities, vital research funding and hands-on mentorship as they seek to solve some of the biggest problems impacting health in our state and nation. Congratulations to Dr. Yurochko and everyone impacted by the CAIPP on our campus!

Welcome to the future of LSU Health Shreveport.
What was once the former Sears at Mall St. Vincent is becoming 181,000 square feet of Class A research space that will fuel breakthroughs in cancer, cardiovascular disease and beyond. Our unprecedented research momentum is outgrowing our current space.

This transformation ensures that the next major discovery never has to wait.

Thank you to the Louisiana Legislature for investing an initial $25M to help make this vision possible.
We’re grateful for their commitment, but more investment is required to get the project to the finish line. If you want to be a part of this transformative project, contact the LSU Health Foundation to see how you can support life-changing discoveries right here at home.
