It was an honor to welcome Giovanni Barrios on to our campus this week to kick off our 2026/2027 VASD Friction Series! His impactful discussion centered around how his art is influenced by his time with Scouting America, and how it impacted his own ideals and sense of belonging. Additionally, our students had the chance to discuss these ideas personally with him in our student-led Q+A. Shoutout to Kelsey Ward, a Illustration professor, for this week’s !

All of Kelsey Ward's work is based on the foundational principle of illustration: storytelling. From sticker designs, to concepts, to full illustrations, Professor Ward tries to capture a full story in each work. All pieces were done digitally with some traditional sketching in the early phases of design.

Join us September 8 at 5:30 for Geovanni Barrios' VASD Artist Talk! Barrios will share how his work pulls from his experiences as a Scout and the well of Scouting’s visual history. On the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence, Barrios will highlight the legacy of the country's most influential youth program and how his work confronts a cultural inheritance that once excluded him. Spanning sculpture, painting, performance, and historical research, his practice grapples with these histories to reimagine belonging and expand definitions of national identity, masculinity, and our relationships to nature.
