🎨Be The “I” in KIND — Our Mural Project 🌈

Our young artists explored the elements of art — focusing on color wheels and lines — then brought their learning to life through a school mural that proudly stands beside the “I” in KIND. 💛

From planning and sketching, to choosing materials and adding their final touches, every child’s hand and heart shaped this piece.

Because a school mural is more than art on a wall —
it’s a voice of our community,
an opportunity for collaboration,
and a joyful practice of kindness in action. 💕

🖌️ Together, we don’t just paint — we belong.

This week, our classroom turned into a little art studio of discovery! 🎨 As the students explored Islamic geometry, I brought in a handmade Islamic lamp for a bit of inspiration — and instantly, curiosity filled the room. They began asking:
💬 “How did you make it?”
💬 “What’s a mosaic?”
💬 “Where did this kind of art come from?”

Following the child’s lead, one quest at a time. As I was reading I Am We: A Book of Community by Susan Verde, I realized it was the perfect opportunity to start group projects where students collaborate as one team — building community while exploring their curiosity.

So… I followed their wonder! 🌈

We began a series of paper mosaic activities inspired by their questions — connecting art, culture, and history.

Through mosaic making, children are:
🧩 Strengthening fine motor skills
🎨 Exploring patterns, symmetry, and color balance
💭 Building focus, patience, and creativity
🤝 Learning collaboration and shared expression

Every question, every sparkle of curiosity — that’s where learning begins. 🌙 Where every child leads the quest.

Stories as Windows and Mirrors

Books can be mirrors—reflecting who children are—
and windows—helping them see others’ worlds.

Select stories that show diverse families, communities, and possibilities.
Try:

The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson

Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman

Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña

When children see themselves and others represented, they build pride, empathy, and fairness.

📖 Great classrooms don’t just teach ABCs — they teach identity, inclusion, and justice.

Move Beyond Color-Blind

Children see race — and so should we.
Ignoring race doesn’t make classrooms fairer; it often silences identity.
Instead of being “color-blind,” be color-aware 🌈.
That means naming and celebrating differences as part of what makes us beautifully human.
🧩 Try This:
Read Happy in Our Skin by Fran Manushkin.
Invite children to mix skin-tone paints and describe their shades — cinnamon, cocoa, honey gold — in positive, loving ways.
When we normalize race conversations early, children learn inclusion, empathy, and confidence.

The Magic of Children's Schema Play! ✨
Ever wonder why your child loves to fill, dump, and repeat, or can't stop jumping and throwing? It's all about schema play – those repetitive, deeply satisfying actions that are actually crucial for their cognitive development!
As adults, shifting our perspective is key. Instead of seeing these behaviors as "challenges," let's view them as rich opportunities to identify and build upon their natural learning schemas! When children are exploring these patterns, they're asking "what if?" and actively constructing their understanding of the world.
Let's look at some common schemas and how we can support them:
🧪 The "Fill, Dump, Repeat" Explorer:
They're wondering: "What happens if I add this? What does this feel like?"
Try This: Provide sensory bins with various materials, sugar cubes & water for dissolving, soda & vinegar for chemical reactions (supervised!), or collage materials like beads, feathers, leaves, clay/playdough with cutters and buttons. Let them experiment!
🤸‍♀️ The "Jump & Throw" Dynamo:
They're asking: "How can I move my body? How far can this go?"
Try This: Safely incorporate big body movements indoors! Offer a basket of soft pom-poms and use double-sided sticky tape on a wall. Encourage them to throw the balls onto the tape, then ask where else they think we should put tape for more throwing fun!
🕳️ The "Hiding & Enclosing" Cozy Creator:
They're wondering: "How cozy can I get? What's inside?"
Try This: Wrap small objects (dolls, animals) in tape or tissue paper. Let children unwrap and then re-wrap them! This strengthens concepts like object permanence and cause & effect in a delightful way.
When we interpret schema-related behaviors as opportunities, we spark their learning and help them thrive. Let's build upon their natural curiosities!
