Every 8 minutes, a child with autism wanders away from a caregiver. And sadly, water is often where they go. πŸ’™

This isn’t always about someone not paying attention. Wandering can happen incredibly quickly, and for families of children with autism, the risk around water is something we all need to understand.

For some of our amazing children with autism, water can bring a sense of calm and comfort that they may not always find in the busy world around them. πŸ’™ That attraction to water is exactly why teaching water safety is so important.

The statistics are heartbreaking:

πŸ’§ Drowning is responsible for roughly 90% of deaths associated with autism-related wandering.
πŸ’§ Research has found that children with autism face a dramatically higher risk of fatal drowning than other children.
πŸ’§ Nearly half of children with autism may wander or elope at some point.

This is why I believe in having layers of protection.

πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ Water-safety and swimming lessons taught in a way your child understands
πŸšͺ Alarms and secure locks on doors, windows, gates, and pool areas
πŸ“ Identification such as a bracelet, shoe tag, or GPS tracker
πŸ—ΊοΈ Knowing where every nearby pool, lake, canal, pond, or other body of water isβ€”and making sure babysitters, teachers, family members, and caregivers know too

And swimming lessons shouldn't only be about swimming across the pool. Children need to practice how to float, breathe, turn toward safety, find the wall or steps, and get themselves out when possible.

One unexpected moment can happen so quickly. The more skills and layers of protection we can give our children, the better. πŸ’™

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn water safety in a way that works for THEM.

Please share. You never know which family may need to see this today. πŸ’™πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ

πŸ’¦ Water Safety Reminder πŸ’¦

Always remove pool toys and floats from the water after swimming. Colorful toys can attract children back to the poolβ€”even when no adult is watching.

A child may reach for a toy, accidentally fall in, and be unable to get out. Once swim time is over, clear the pool area, secure all entrances, and always keep close supervision.

A few extra minutes of prevention can save a life. πŸŠβ€β™€οΈπŸ’™

Most people who drown in submerged cars never knew what to do.
If your car ever ends up underwater, don’t panic β€” and remember these steps:
πŸ”΄ Don’t waste time trying to open the doors.
Water pressure makes them nearly impossible to push open while submerged.
🟠 Don’t roll down the windows.
Rushing water will make escape even harder β€” and can trap you faster.
🟑 Remove the headrest.
Most are detachable and can double as a window-breaking tool.
🟒 Break the back window.
Use the metal tip of the headrest (or a window-breaking tool) to smash the rear windshield β€” it’s designed to β€œkick out” and is your best exit point.
πŸ”΅ Why the back window?
By design, most vehicles float rear-first. That window will be your fastest, safest way out.
🟣 Knowledge is survival.
You may never need this. But if you do β€” it could save your life.

🚨 PLEASE BE A WATER WATCHER 🚨

57 children have drowned this year here in Florida .

Let that sink in for a moment.

These are not just statistics. These are babies, toddlers, sons, daughters, grandchildren, and friends whose lives were cut short in just seconds.

As a swim instructor, I see it every day. Parents scrolling on their phones. Doors left open. Gates propped open. Children playing near water without constant supervision.

Drowning is silent.

It doesn't happen with splashing, yelling, or cries for help like we see in the movies. It can happen in less than a minute.

πŸ“΅ PUT THE PHONE DOWN.
πŸ‘€ WATCH THE CHILDREN.
πŸšͺ Install door alarms.
🏊 Put alarms on pools.
πŸ”’ Use self-closing, self-latching gates.
πŸ›Ÿ Create layers of protection.
πŸ’™ Enroll your children in swim lessons.

No single layer is enough. Fences fail. Doors get left open. Alarms can be missed. That's why we need multiple layers of protection.

The most important layer is YOU.

Your child doesn't care about your text message, your social media feed, or your phone call. They need your eyes on them.

When children are near water, be present. Be engaged. Be the designated Water Watcher.

One distracted moment can change a family forever.

Look at the kids, NOT the cell phone.

Let's stop adding names to the drowning statistics and start saving lives.
