Virginia Tech’s location in the heart of the New River Valley gives students access to a thriving arts community beyond campus! For music major Kaeli Berry, this has yielded opportunities to perform throughout the region, including the Blacksburg Winter Lights Festival and singing the national anthem for the Salem RidgeYaks.

“My vocal instructor, Brain Thorsett, has been enthusiastic about my involvement in the local music scene,” says Kaeli. “He has provided multiple contacts for me to get even more involved.”

The blend of campus and community opportunities make the New River Valley an exceptional place for students to hone their craft!

This summer, Arts Leadership MFA student Bria Weisz (‘27) is serving as Cheteyan Advancement Fellow at the Gulfshore Playhouse, where they are gaining hands-on experience in nonprofit theatre administration. Their work has included creating a grant proposal to support a theatre-based English-learning program, supporting donor stewardship efforts, and planning and executing opening receptions for the theater’s summer conservatory musicals (pictured is Bria at the Freaky Friday opening reception!).

“I know that Virginia Tech’s MFA program has prepared me to understand all aspects of nonprofit theatre administration and to do the quality work needed for a professional role,” they say.

Through professional experiences like these, our MFA students are able to apply their learning to the field while building the confidence needed for careers in arts leadership.

Alumni Spotlight: Emily Staton (‘26)

From Virginia Tech to Cape Cod, Emily has spent the summer performing with Cape Harmony, Cape Cod’s only all-treble, professional a-cappella ensemble whose members come from colleges and universities across the United States. Along with performing throughout Massachusetts, she has taken on new leadership opportunities within the group.

"Recently, I have been elected as an Assistant Music Director of the group, which has been very exciting and extremely rewarding. This has allowed me to apply the leadership and musicianship I ultimately gained while being an undergraduate student at Virginia Tech."

We are excited to see her continue her journey this fall as she begins a Master of Music Education at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Great ideas deserve great communication. 🎭⚙️

This summer, the Center for Communicating Science at Virginia Tech partnered with Virginia Tech's VT CEED to bring communication workshops to participants in UPWARDS, C-Tech², and the Watford Engineering Experience (WEE).

Through applied theatre exercises led by Dr. Jon Catherwood-Ginn and Brittney S. Harris, students explored how voice, body language, storytelling, and audience connection can strengthen their communication skills. By stepping into interactive activities, participants gained tools to share their ideas with confidence and make complex concepts more engaging and accessible.

We are grateful to the faculty facilitators who shared their expertise, energy, and creativity with this year's participants, helping the next generation of engineers discover the power of communication.

What can a Virginia Tech music education lead to? For Percussion Performance rising sophomore Greta Laing, it meant spending a week immersed in the Nashville Marimba Sessions, learning from world-class artists, performing for peers, and building connections with percussionists from around the world.

"Dr. Stevens guided me through the audition process and helped me create an audition tape that I was proud of. The Virginia Tech music program has encouraged me to be open to new ideas, learn from all different people, and to absorb as much knowledge as I can."

At Virginia Tech, students don't just study music: they gain the skills, confidence, and mentorship to pursue extraordinary opportunities beyond campus!
