🗓️ Aug. 28, 1972 – Capt. Steve Ritchie ’64 records his fifth MiG-21 kill, making him the first ace to graduate from the United States Air Force Academy; he was the Air Force’s only pilot ace of the Vietnam War.

For his accomplishments, he received the 1972 Colonel James Jabara Award for Airmanship.

On a Sunday morning in Boulder, Colorado, a suspect hurled Molotov cocktails into a crowd, injuring 15 people. One later died.

Within an hour, Mark Michalek ’99 received phone calls from the White House, FBI headquarters, local law enforcement and elected officials.

“Leadership is really tested because it doesn’t happen on a Monday at 8 a.m. when you’ve had your coffee and you’re ready to go. You’ve got to be that steady hand to land the plane,” Michalek says.

🗓️ Aug. 12, 2013 — Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Michelle Johnson ’81 makes United States Air Force Academy history as she assumes command as its 19th superintendent.

A distinguished graduate, Rhodes Scholar and command pilot, Gen. Johnson returned to her alma mater to lead the institution responsible for developing the Air Force’s next generation of officers.
