Penda Learning has been included in Tech & Learning September Edtech Show & Tell!

When we created Cosmos, Penda's instructional assistant, our goal wasn’t to add AI just for the sake of adding AI. We wanted to build something that could genuinely help students when they get stuck, offering a hint, explaining a concept another way, or coaching them through their thinking , while still keeping the learning in the student’s hands. It was important to help students build understanding without simply giving them the answer.

A big thank you to the Tech & Learning team for including Penda's Cosmos, Instructional Assistant among the new edtech features within Penda Learning that caught their attention this month! 🙌 We appreciate the work you do to spotlight new ideas and innovations supporting educators and students.

Great science teachers don’t need to know everything.

They need the right support to help students ask questions, work through misconceptions, and make sense of the science behind what they’re learning. 🔬

Penda Learning helps educators teach with confidence through built-in:

💡 Answer explanations
📘 Instructional Guides with misconceptions, key questions, and classroom tips
🚀 AI-powered instructional assistance for students and teachers

Because great teaching isn’t about having all the answers.

It’s about helping students discover them.

What if the best way to teach science isn’t to start with the answer, but with a mystery?

Penda Learning's Vice President of Content and Learning, Mindy Pearson, shares a great example of how phenomena-based instruction can turn a real-world challenge in the Florida Everglades into meaningful science learning. This is one of many ways Penda engages students and makes science learning fun.

What happens when a species enters an ecosystem where the conditions are almost perfectly suited for its survival? That question can become a powerful Florida science phenomenon.

In this Everglades example, students examine the success of invasive Burmese pythons using multiple forms of evidence:
• python sightings over time
• diet data
• habitat and climate conditions
• changes in native mammal populations
• maps showing where pythons are most commonly detected

Instead of beginning with the statement, “Burmese pythons are an invasive species,” students begin with a mystery: Why have Burmese pythons become so successful in the Everglades?

From there, students can investigate how warm temperatures, abundant prey, wetland habitat, reproduction, and limited predation may contribute to population growth.

They can also tackle a second, more complex question: What happens to an ecosystem when a new predator becomes highly successful?

That opens the door to science ideas involving food webs, population dynamics, limiting factors, predator-prey relationships, adaptations, competition, and ecosystem stability.

This is why phenomenon-based instruction can be so powerful. Students are not simply memorizing the definition of an invasive species. They are analyzing evidence, identifying patterns, considering cause-and-effect relationships, and constructing an explanation for something happening in a real Florida ecosystem.

The question shifts from:
“What is an invasive species?”
to:
“Why is this invasive species thriving here, and what does that mean for everything else that lives here?”

That is a much more interesting reason to learn the science.

🎉 Penda Learning has been named App of the Week by the Learning Counsel!

We’re proud to be recognized for helping districts strengthen science achievement with engaging activities and assessments handcrafted to NGSS performance expectations and state standards, along with targeted intervention, automation, and gamification for grades 3- 12.

Penda Learning gives administrators and teachers the tools to support every learner, from Tier 1 instruction to targeted RTI/MTSS intervention, with three-dimensional, phenomena-based science activities, actionable reporting, differentiated supports, and built-in tools that help reduce teacher workload. Ask us about our latest launch of Cosmos, our AI Instructional Assistant to support teachers and students.

Most importantly, Penda helps districts build science learning step by step, starting in the earliest grades so students develop the knowledge, confidence, and skills they need for success in tested grades and beyond.

Exciting News for Back to School! Today we announced the release of Cosmos, our new custom AI-powered instructional assistant for students and teachers.

Cosmos is AI support designed for helping students think through challenging science concepts without simply giving them the answer.

Embedded directly into Penda Learning, Cosmos can provide scaffolded explanations, strategic hints, quick summaries, and step-by-step coaching, while giving teachers visibility into where students are getting stuck and where additional support may be needed.

We’re excited about what Cosmos can mean for students, teachers, and districts looking for thoughtful ways to bring AI into science learning.

As districts are searching for new ways to address teacher shortages and improve science outcomes, the conversation has shifted from content delivery to instructional intervention. In a recent article, Steven Miller, PHD explores the ways that instructional intervention platforms like Penda Learning are helping schools create stronger support systems for student achievement. At Penda Learning, gamification is a purposeful reward system built around rigorous, standards-aligned science instruction. Students earn resources and advance in SpaceCRAFT only after completing high-quality science activities and assessments.

That added motivation encourages students to stay engaged, retry challenging work, and keep learning until they reach mastery. It also creates greater ownership, collaboration, and energy in the classroom—exactly what one science supervisor recently described when sharing the impact SpaceCRAFT is having on students.

Penda’s efficacy results demonstrate that Penda Learning is far more than a game. At the same time, our CODiE Award for Best Gamification in Learning shows that we understand something equally important: when students are motivated to persist, practice, and improve, meaningful science learning follows.
