Did you know that when your dog looks you in the eyes, you both generate the "love hormone" oxytocin? You may hear about this and more in the final 2025-26 Voyages of Discovery Series event.
Join Dean Allison Danell and the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences as we welcome dog cognition expert Dr. Brian Hare to campus on Thursday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. in the Main Campus Student Center Ballrooms for his talk on the “Survival of the Friendliest.”
Hare is a professor of evolutionary anthropology, psychology and neuroscience at Duke University. He and his wife and research partner, Vanessa Woods, were featured in the Netflix documentary, “Inside the Mind of Dogs.” Hare is the author of several bestsellers with Woods, including “The Genius of Dogs,” “Survival of the Friendliest: Understanding Our Origins and Rediscovering Our Common Humanity” and “Puppy Kindergarten.”
Learn more about Hare in this ECU article https://news.ecu.edu/2026/01/20/voyages-series-to-feature-best-selling-author-brian-hare/ and how to get your FREE lecture ticket with your valid ECU 1 Card on the Voyages website https://voyages.ecu.edu/
Also, watch this 60 Minutes story featuring Hare and how dogs infer better than chimpanzees, can learn extensive words, and how they demonstrate their love for humans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGlUZWNjxPA
