Making Waves at 4-H Day Camp! 🌊

On June 5, 2026, the Franklin County CED, Sharon Cilano, teamed up with the Jefferson and Leon Counties 4-H Day Camp for a day of coastal discovery. Dr. Cilano dove into the fascinating world of coastal careers and the incredible engineering of oyster reefs. The highlight of the day? Hands-on creativity! Campers put on their scientist and artist hats, using craft materials to construct their very own miniature oyster reef ecosystems. Plus, they got an up-close look at the lives of some shell-switching locals: hermit crabs!

Despite the decline in the firefly populations due to habitat loss and decreasing dark spaces, fireflies can still be spotted in Florida. To support these unique insects, try turning off artificial light at night, avoid chemical products in the landscape, and create habitat with native plants and a water source.

For more information on creating an oasis for fireflies, take a look at this UF/IFAS blog article https://blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/polkco/2021/06/12/how-to-create-a-firefly-oasis/
