BE CAREFUL ANOTHER SCAM ALERT!

There is another scam going around where callers are identifying themselves as members of the Polk County Sheriff's Department and claiming they need you to return their call or meet them somewhere to discuss a legal matter.

The scammers are using the actual names of Sheriff's Office employees. They may tell you they're Sgt. So-and-So, Major So-and-So, or another legitimate employee.

So don't make the mistake of calling the Sheriff's Office and simply asking, “Does Sgt. So-and-So work there?”

They probably do.

Instead, call the agency's main, publicly listed number and ask them to verify the specific matter the caller is claiming to contact you about.

Polk County Sheriff's Office main number is (863) 298-6200.

If you do answer one of these calls:

Don't provide personal information.
Don't give them money.
Don't call a number they provide.
Don't meet them somewhere they've instructed you to go.

Hang up and either report it or verify the call yourself.

Law enforcement generally isn't going to cold-call you from some random personal cell or private number and then direct you to meet somewhere to handle a legal issue. If there really is a legitimate reason for law enforcement to contact you, verify it through the agency's official main number.

And pay attention to the details.

As you can see in this particular call, the number isn't a local Sheriff's Office number. The message also refers to the agency as the “Sheriff's Department.” Here in Polk County, it is the Polk County Sheriff's Office. That may seem like a small detail, but scammers often get official terminology wrong.

PCSO itself has warned that scammers have used real employees' names, fake callback numbers, and even recordings designed to sound like an official Sheriff's Office.

Don't let a name, badge number, title, or convincing voicemail fool you.

When in doubt: hang up, call the agency's main number, and verify/report.

I honestly had no idea it would generate the attention it did.

To the few who chose to twist my words, turn them into something that fit your own narrative, throw insults my way and then accuse me of hiding behind my gun. That's rich.

I am so sick and tired of the constant whining about Polk County, our local law enforcement, and our local government.

Every day it's somebody hiding behind a fake name, calling everything and everyone corrupt and shady, followed by “This would NEVER happen back home.”

Well, here's a thought, take your whiny ass back home.

If wherever you came from was so much better, why are you here?

And if you moved here because you liked what Florida had to offer, specifically Polk County, don't move here and then demand we turn it into the place you supposedly "escaped" from.

I'd bet some of these keyboard as****es either have a history with our local law enforcement or came from somewhere with a completely different set of rules and are pi**ed because Polk County doesn't play.

If you don't like something, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

Go to the meetings. Ask questions. Vote. Run for office. Get involved.

But hiding behind a keyboard and anonymously trashing the community you chose to live in?

You're just a coward.

Polk County isn't perfect. Florida isn't perfect. Nowhere is.

But I'm tired of watching people move here and then spend all their time sitting on Facebook anonymously bitching about it how terrible it is here.

The person sitting behind the wheel of the vehicle next to you may be the biggest threat you encounter today.

We can be doing everything right and still find ourselves sharing the road with someone who is drunk, distracted, careless, clueless, enraged, or simply doesn't know how to safely operate a vehicle.

Every day we hear about it but especially these past few days have been filled with bad drivers who made bad decisions.

Like the DUI driver who wrecked his vehicle over the weekend, then fled on foot with two very young children, dragging them through the swamp trying to avoid law enforcement.

The drunk woman driving the wrong way on the Parkway with a small child in the vehicle.

The woman driving on Highway 27 who missed her turn and decided to back her vehicle down Highway 27 instead of driving to the next turn and coming back around.

Then we have the aggressive drivers. The road-ragers. The people who weave through traffic, ride your bumper, cut you off, slam on their brakes, or decide they're going to teach another driver a lesson.

And some of those idiot drivers decide to bring a firearm into the middle of their road-rage stupidity.

Let's not forget about the people texting. The people speeding. The people driving 20 miles under the speed limit with a line of cars behind them. The people who merge into interstate traffic doing 45 mph. The people who don't use turn signals. The ones who think they are the only ones on the roadway.

That vehicle you're driving can hurt or kill someone just as easily as the firearm you're carrying.

If you don't know the laws of the road, learn them.
If you don't know how to properly operate your vehicle, take a driving class.

If you're drinking or using, DON'T drive.

If you're angry enough that you're willing to chase down another driver because they made you mad, you need to pull your vehicle over and get a grip.

If you're texting, put the damn phone down.

Driving is a privilege.

The decisions you make behind the wheel can change yours or someone else's life in a matter of seconds.

Since I have a full week of new students next week, I thought this would be a great reminder to cover a few tips for getting the most out of your training session.

~Give yourself plenty of time.

Show up a few minutes early. If your appointment is at 9 and you show up at 9, you're already cutting into your training time.

Allow yourself time before and after your lesson.
This is your time to learn, so be present for it.

~Avoid the negative self-talk.

You’re there to learn. Nobody walks into a lesson knowing everything, and you’re not expected to get everything right the first time.

This is a process.

Some things will come naturally. Some things will take repetition. That’s normal. Training is about learning, practicing, and building on what you learned.

~Hydrate.

Fi****ms training can be more physical than people realize. You’ll be using muscles in your arms, core, and legs, sometimes in ways you’re not used to. Don’t be surprised if you’re a little sore afterward.

~Ask questions ahead of time.

Know the cost and what you need to bring with you.

Are fi****ms provided? Are there loaner eye and ear protections available? Do you need to bring your own ammunition, or can you purchase it at the range?

Don’t assume. Ask ahead of time so you show up prepared.

~ Talk to your instructor.

Communication is key. Let us know what you're struggling with, what you want to work on, and what you need from your training.

The better we communicate, the better your lesson can work for you.

~Safety is not optional.

I take safety very seriously, and we will cover everything you need to know from a safety standpoint before your lesson.

But let me be clear, I will not ignore safety violations.

I will address it once and if any safety rules continue to be ignored after they have been addressed, your lesson will end and you will be sent home.

There will be no refund.

My responsibility is to provide you with a safe learning environment. Your responsibility is to follow the safety rules.

~And finally let's have some fun.

Yes, we're going to take safety seriously. Yes, we're going to work. And yes, you may have to step outside your comfort zone a little.

But you're going to learn something new, build confidence, and hopefully walk away feeling better than when you walked in.

I can't wait to see you all on the range!

There are two significant tragic events that have happened during my adult life that I will always remember.

9/11 is one of them.

I remember packing to come home that very morning from a girls' weekend getaway. We walked into the hotel lobby for breakfast and saw the first plane crash into the North Tower on the television.

I remember standing there watching it and thinking this can't be.
And then came the chaos that followed.
The realization that what we were watching was real.

That America was under attack.
The second plane. The Pentagon. Flight 93. The towers falling.

The fear. The confusion. The disbelief. The heartbreak.

I don't think those of us who watched it unfold that morning will ever forget where we were or how we felt.

I hope we never forget that day.

I hope we continue to teach our children about the sacrifices that were made that day. About the first responders who ran toward those buildings when everyone else was trying to get out.

About the 2,977 innocent lives that were lost when terrorists struck American soil.

Our children/grandchildren did not live through that day the way many Americans did.

So we have to tell them.
We have to remember.

September 11, 2001, is more than a date in a history book.
It was a day that changed America forever.

It is a day I will never forget.

25 years later.

Never forget the lives lost.
Never forget the sacrifices made.
Never forget what happened on American soil.
