THE KAYLA HARRISON PHENOMENON 🥋🏆

Kayla Harrison did not simply move from judo to MMA. She rebuilt herself as a fighter.

She became the first American judoka—male or female—to win Olympic gold. Then she did it again four years later. She was already a world champion and a two-time Olympic champion. For most athletes, that would have been the perfect ending.

But Harrison chose to become a beginner again.

She entered MMA, learned striking and cage fighting, won two PFL world titles, and eventually captured the UFC women’s bantamweight championship.

What makes her journey even more extraordinary is the transformation: from judo’s −78 kg division to the UFC’s 61.2 kg bantamweight limit.

But her success is not based on strength alone. She translated elite judo into MMA:

Kumi-kata became hand fighting and underhooks.
Kuzushi became pressure and off-balancing.
Osaekomi became dominant top control.
Kansetsu-waza became fight-ending submissions.

Judo built her foundation. Her ability to adapt made her a champion again.

That is the true Kayla Harrison phenomenon: she reached the top, stepped into a completely different arena, and climbed all the way back to the summit.

Where does Kayla Harrison rank among the greatest female combat-sports athletes of all time?
