Military Zip Code Status Update

USPS is listing 6 zip codes as being temporarily suspended as of right now.

Military Post Offices: 09306, 09330, 09365
Diplomatic Post Offices: 09312, 09874, 09880

Our list is a bit longer, as some of the zip codes that had temporary suspensions have not reopened according to the USPS military restrictions tools. We have these blocked so they can't accidentally be sent to.

USPS Hazardous Materials Fee Changes – Effective July 12, 2026

Beginning July 12, 2026, USPS will begin charging a Hazardous Materials Handling Fee on domestic packages containing eligible hazardous materials, including certain lithium battery shipments and other regulated items.
USPS will also begin assessing a Hazardous Materials Noncompliance Fee on commercial shipments that are not properly identified. If hazardous materials aren't correctly declared or the required package markings don't match the shipping information, additional fees may be assessed.
What this means for you:
Always identify hazardous materials when creating your shipping label.
Apply any required markings for hazardous materials or lithium batteries to your package.
Make sure your package, labels, and shipping information all match USPS requirements.
A few reminders for Ship Thrifty users:
Military shipments (APO/FPO/DPO)
Never place hazardous materials or lithium battery labels on packages going to overseas military bases.
Select Yes for Dangerous Goods (Hazmat) in Ship Thrifty and provide an accurate description of the item.
If you're shipping an electronic device containing a lithium battery, it must be new. Used or damaged devices containing lithium batteries cannot be mailed to overseas military addresses, so be sure your customs description clearly indicates the item is new.
Domestic U.S. shipments
Ship Thrifty only allows Dangerous Goods (Hazmat) to be shipped using ground transportation.
Select Yes for Dangerous Goods (Hazmat) when creating labels.
Apply the required hazardous materials or lithium battery label and write "For Ground Transportation Only" on the outside of the package.
Taking a few extra seconds to properly identify hazardous materials can help prevent delays, returned packages, and additional USPS fees.

📦 USPS Shipping Update Coming July 12, 2026

The USPS is changing how DIM (dimensional) weight is calculated and updating its package measurement rounding rules.

Dimensional Weight Change:
Dimensional weight pricing applies to packages that exceed 1,728 cubic inches (one cubic foot). The divisor used to calculate shipping costs for larger, lightweight packages will change from 166 to 139.

This change will increase shipping costs for many large lightweight packages because USPS believes it more accurately reflects the amount of space packages occupy in the transportation network.

Updated Rounding Rules:
USPS is moving to a consistent rounding rule for all package dimensions.

Any fraction of an inch must now be rounded up to the next whole inch.

Examples:
• 12.1 inches rounds up to 13 inches
• 13.1 inches rounds up to 14 inches

⚠️ Important Tip:
Don’t rely solely on the printed dimensions shown on a box. Many manufacturers list the inside dimensions, not the outside measurements used for shipping calculations.

Boxes should be measured from outside corner to outside corner for:
• Length
• Width
• Height

Measuring and rounding correctly will help avoid postage adjustments, delays, nonrefundable returns, or delivery issues.
