The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is in the final months of a three-year restoration of its Dutch Room gallery. This comprehensive restoration is addressing everything from terracotta tile floor to the intricately painted 16th century coffered ceiling and many of the works in-between. It is also the room where six of thirteen irreplaceable works of art were stolen in 1990, leaving behind empty frames and a reminder of the Museum’s unending hope for their return. Join Holly Salmon, the John L. and Susan K. Gardner Director of Conservation for a discussion of how she and the conservation team are carrying out this extensive restoration and the discoveries they’ve made along the way.

Ada Karmi Melamede is one of the most accomplished architects in the world, but very little is known about her outside of her home country of Israel. The movie is a deeply moving portrait of an extraordinary woman directed by her daughter, filmmaker and former architect. It profiles a woman and artist deeply tested by the realities of career and motherhood, and a unique mother-daughter bond. Despite personal sacrifices, Ada’s work gave physical form to some of Israel’s highest democratic ideals, most notably in the Supreme Court Building in Jerusalem, the Open University, Ben Gurion Airport, and numerous civic institutions around the country.

A talk back with producer/director Yael Melamede will follow the screening.

Thirty years ago, the doors of the Arava Institute opened on Kibbutz Ketura. Since then, it has brought together Israelis (Jews & Arabs), Palestinians, Jordanians, Moroccans and other college age students from around the world (including alumni from BBA) to study and live together. These past years have been a stress test for the work of the Institute, but it has remained true to its mission. In addition to its academic program, the Institute is the home to a number of Transboundary research centers as well as the Center for Applied Environmental Diplomacy which is active in Gaza. Rabbi Michael Cohen, who has been involved with the Institute since its doors opened dividing his time between Vermont and Ketura, will share firsthand experiences, lessons, and insights from the past three decades.
