If your goal is to get “toned” (made up buzzword to sell you stuff — muscles either get bigger or smaller, period, end of story), you need to pick up weights that scare you a little bit…
Ladies, you are SO much stronger than you think. Your toddler weighs more than the weight you’re lifting in the gym. So do your groceries. So does the giant pile of Amazon boxes you’re pulling in from your front porch.
It’s time to pick up a weight that demands your focus and attention. Here are some ways to determine whether or not the weight is an appropriate intensity for you:
💭You can’t have a casual conversation during your set
💭You NEED rest in between sets
💭You start to wonder if you’ll be able to fully complete the next rep
💭You don’t need a million exercises and a “cardio finisher” to feel like you’ve gotten a good workout
Muscles are a physiological adaptation, meaning there HAS to be a stimulus and a demand. There has to be a signal to your body that it needs to be better and stronger to be able to do what you’re asking it to. Your body is not just going to make muscle for fun.
So pick a weight that requires your attention and intention. Pick a weight that scares you a little bit!
*DISCLAIMER: I am in no way saying to be reckless and practice unsafe movement with improper form just to check off a heavier weight box. I highly recommend working with a trainer who can ensure your movement patterns AND your intensity are safe, optimal, and effective for your goals.
