Three months! Your little one’s personality is starting to show now! They’re becoming even more aware of their surroundings and are no longer newborns.

But just because they’re no longer newborns doesn’t mean they won’t exhibit newborn behaviors. Your little one may still favor contact naps. They may still wake a few times a night. They may still be taking short naps. And that’s ok!

At 3 months you may want to try one nap a day in their crib and you may want to try one arm out from the swaddle (if they’re still swaddled).

If you’re tired- you’re not alone! You’ve just gotten through some of the hardest months and have adjusted to life with a newborn! There is hope though! You are in store for some changes up ahead- but you got this! It’s nothing you can handle, and if you need help, I’m just a message away!

Did you know that yawning and eye rubbing can actually be a sign of overtired? Yawning can also be a sign of being bored or under stimulated too. And babies will yawn quite a bit after they’ve woken up too 🫠 So yawning doesn’t always mean overtired 😜

I know in the moment it’s not always that obvious, or it seems like it’s just one more thing to keep track of. But getting to know our babies sleepy cues in addition to wake windows can help to get those naps in the sweet spot.

Month by month naps! More to come on suggested (yes I said suggested! These aren’t the end all be all- just AVERAGES that your baby may or may not fall into) nap routines.

In those first few weeks, it really is just a day to day basis. Your newborn will more than likely be sleepy all the time and might only be up to feed. Ensuring that they feed every 2-3 hours will help give them some awake time, and gradually IF YOU WANT you can start to make a very loose schedule. Keep them up for 40-60 minutes and just go from there!

Congratulations your precious new born baby has arrived! For some the celebration may be short lived and the reality sets in quick. You have gone through one of the most beautiful and challenging changes yet- created human life and now not only do you have to take care of yourself (and maybe others) but now your newborn baby. Just like with pregnancy, everyone experiences their new role as a parent differently. Some are completely over the moon maybe even glowing. More than we know though, some are may be overcome with emotions they didn’t even know existed. And on top of that you also have this little one who is experiencing a whole new world for the first time as well! But you’re not alone! Some refer to this brand new stage as the Fourth Trimester, indicating that there is still more growing and developing to happen and for both you and baby!

Here are some tips that can help:
1. Ask for Help! Something as small as asking someone to watch the baby while you shower!
2. Take it Easy! The clothes, dishes, and to-do list can wait. Don’t pass up the opportunity to rest to do chores instead. They can wait!
3. Soak up all those snuggles and enjoy those contact naps! They won’t last forever! Don’t worry about a consistent routine or schedule. Just take this time to get to know your baby.
4. Give yourself and the baby grace. Whether you’re a first time parent or a fourth time, there is still a learning curve and we’re all just trying to do our best!

I think it’s a common misconception to think that sleeping training only happens because caregivers are “selfish” and just want sleep for themselves. Even if that was the case, I don’t fault that person AT ALL. Raising these little humans is HARD and doing it without sleep is even harder.

I knew I would be sleep deprived. And I knew I wanted to respond to them in the middle of the night. I tried to do everything in my power to make them perfect little sleepers. And fortunately for the most part we did pretty well. But somewhere at some point, things changed. It was a whole THIRTEEN MONTHS before my husband and I said something has got to change. I mean I had my one year olds in swings! And the frustration was just building. Something had to change. And that’s when I reached out to and worked with my now mentor Hannah on helping me and my boys get back to a place where we enjoyed bedtime and they could fall asleep with ease.

Tell me, can you relate???

In the past sleep training was synonymous with Ferber or Cry It Out where a caregiver was essentially asked to just let their baby cry until they fell asleep. But that’s not the case anymore! There are many different ways to support your baby to sleep, some with lots of support, some with very little, and some that are right in the middle. What’s great about our team and our philosophy at is that YOU are able to choose and control how much support your baby needs based on what you know about them! We might be the expert when it comes to sleep but YOU are the expert in your baby!

Did you know there was a difference? A lot of times these words will be used interchangeably, but they’re not the same and there’s a pretty big difference between the two. So if you come across some information or an account suggesting your little one can self- soothe, you may want to dig a little deeper and see what they are referring to. Self- soothing is something that even we as adults struggle with, let alone our babies. Regulating emotions are hard and our temperament plays a big part in that too- so please don’t feel like something is wrong if you’re baby can’t self- soothe or self-settle, they’re not supposed to, that’s what we’re here for! The truth is many newborns and even many older babies can’t simply switch off and fall asleep without some help. It’s through our help and interaction that they learn!

If you have any questions about these- leave me a comment and I’m happy to add more clarification!

Do you dread getting asked this question, “So are they sleeping through the night yet?” Umm well… Why does this make us feel bad? And why is it even a question? Now I know there are circumstances where there might actually be something that is impacting your babies ability to sleep, but that’s when we get the Pediatrician involved and figure out the what the issue is. But we know that outside of the doctors office this question is not being asked because someone think there are underlying health issues with our baby. And I’m sure it comes from a good place and no one means any harm, but talk about unnecessary pressure and doubt and anxiety that we now have around our baby not sleeping through the night and wondering if we’re creating “bad habits”.

But hey guess what? Babies aren’t supposed to sleep through the night. On average it’s not till around 6 months of age where babies can sleep through most of the night. And even then, there might be a wake up or two.

And although it is normal for them to wake, there are situations where you might want to see if there sleep can be improved. Maybe they’re waking every hour- not as normal. Maybe they’re waking during the night but think it’s day and are ready to play- common, but not sustainable and can be improved.

All I’m saying is, a baby waking through the night should be normalized and we should stop unintentionally creating shame and anxiety by asking one another if our baby is sleeping through the night. All our babies are all so different just like us. There’s no prize in them accomplishing any skill or milestone before someone else.

I knew there would be sleepless nights. I knew having infants/babies would be challenging, but I don’t think we ever REALLY know till we’re in it. And it just got to a point where it WAS HARD. Maybe because of the lack of sleep, maybe because my life changed in what seemed like overnight. Heck maybe even trying to take care of babies in the pandemic made it hard. Who knows! But I reached a point, my husband and I reached a point where we knew things had to change.

I came across a post from another account the other day that talked about how sleep training culture is hard because there are so many factors and variables when it comes to it and it’s not as black and white as people think, and I totally agree. I think the cry out techniques back in the day made it seem really black and white, but that’s not really the case. I’ll elaborate more on this is another post, but what I can say is that changes can be made to help! It is completely normal for babies to wake throughout the night and to need our support while they’re growing, and we can help you and your family sleep more.
