“It is crucial that in order to be an ally, you have to educate yourself. It is okay to ask for resources or information from Black people if you are unsure but is important that you are doing your own research. We are more than willing to give you a basic education, but that deeper level of understanding you must do on your own. There are countless articles and books written about the Black experience and Black people that you can find just by searching what you are looking for in Google. Google Scholar is your friend.⠀

The next level of being a good ally is in speaking out against injustice. In speaking out, it is important to not speak over Black voices. You should be the echo of their voices and not the loudest in the room. When you see injustice happening, the greatest thing you can do in that moment is interjecting yourself. Use your privilege to get the people to see reason or to protect that person. There’s a reason during the Civil Rights era we often saw white people at the front taking the brunt of the brutality because they were there to use their whiteness as a shield for Black people and because those Black people had faced that brutality for years and enough was enough.⠀

The final step in being a good ally is similar to the previous but takes it internally. Sit down with yourself and address your own internal biases that you have inside. What things have you been taught that have become unconscious biases that you have? Do you avoid certain neighborhoods? Have you ever wanted to touch a Black person’s hair? Do you cross the street when a Black man is following you? Do you refer to things as ghetto or ratchet? Do you switch in AAVE when talking to a Black person? These are all unconscious things that you have to address within yourself to stop doing. Once you hold yourself accountable for your biases and microaggressions, then you can truly be a good ally."

“As we celebrate BHM, it is important, now more than ever, for the Latinx community to show up and support our Black brothers and sisters. Why? There is a deeply rooted connection between Latinos and African Americans that stems back to the early days of slavery. Therefore, a long history of African heritage exists in the Latinx lineage that is often overlooked. When you’re celebrating Black lives, you’re celebrating Afro-Latinos, like myself, and you’re celebrating the countless contributions from the African American community that have benefited other minorities including Latinos.⠀

So this month, support a Black-owned business, pick up a book by a Black author that sparks joy, amplify Black voices and educate others around you that may be ignorant to the continued inequality in the Black community that often times mirrors the inequality in our own community. Let this also be a reminder that this isn’t an us vs. them (Latino vs. Black) battle. This is an us vs. the system of oppression. It is our responsibility to learn, teach, and fight the fight together. “
