To get ready for our upcoming school picture days, children designed backdrops during their Studio groups! We love this tradition- each schools backdrop has a unique and dynamic color story, while still being tied together by a unified artistic process.
We can’t wait to see how the photos turn out in front of these collaborative works of art over the next few weeks!

🌤️⛅️☁️ The Sky Mirror Painting project was the first of two sessions inviting Pre-K artists to study the colors of the sky. Working outside in our playspace, artists were invited to paint directly onto mirrors to capture what we observed above us.
“This is Mr. Sun fighting the sky.” -Bennett
It’s like a little sky … right here! -Veera
“Ms. Sun with water in the sky.” -Sage
For inspiration, we read the story Sky Color by Peter H. Reynolds 🎨☁️

In this exploration, the infants engaged with their own sleeping portraits using finger paints. This project invited infants to touch color and interact with familiar images of themselves, blending sensory experience with early forms of self-recognition.

To start our large, collaborative and interactive frames, infants and toddlers were presented with a large piece of cardboard covered in paint and wrapped in plastic. They were invited to smush the paint around under the plastic. Toddlers were curious about the texture of the paint under the plastic and how it would move under them when they poked at, stepped on, and laid down on the plastic!
After the paint dried, Pre K and Preschool classes were presented with the large pieces of cardboard and were invited to add a new layer with tempera paint sticks! The frames were arranged with spacing between them, so that children could interact with the artwork by walking between the four frame panels.

📸 In small groups, Pre-K explored photography while taking walks around the neighborhood, using a different route each time.
“Everyone, let’s take a picture of the motorcycle!” James (Age 3)
“They’re falling down on the street, the leaf.” Yasmine (Age 3)
Children found many subjects for their photographs, including cars, people, plants, and animals.
“I want to take a picture of the table!” Conall (Age 3)
“Can I take a picture of you guys?” Maria (Age 3)
After they took photos outside, images were paired down and stitched together to make a cohesive individual piece by each child.
