Why Some Kids Make Friends but Can't Keep Them 07/28/2026

One of the hardest things to watch as a parent is seeing your child want friendships so badly, yet struggle to make them happen.

For some children, making friends is the biggest challenge. They watch other kids chatting and laughing together but aren’t sure how to join in. They may want friends desperately, but they don’t know how to take that first step.

For others, making the friend isn’t the problem. They meet another child, have a great time together, and you think, “Finally!” Then, a few weeks later, the friendship fizzles. The texts stop. The invitations don’t come. Your child is left wondering what happened, and so are you.

Parents often assume there must have been one big moment that caused the friendship to fall apart. Most of the time, there wasn’t.

Lasting friendships are built or lost in dozens of little moments that most people never notice. Maybe your child unknowingly dominates the conversation because they’re excited to share something they love. Maybe they have a hard time going along with someone else’s idea. Maybe they miss subtle signs that the other child is getting bored, or they become discouraged after one awkward interaction and decide the other person doesn’t like them anymore. When the missteps are unnoticed, they end being repeated and the cycle continues.

Virtually all of the children I meet are incredibly thoughtful, funny, and caring. They genuinely want friends and they genuinely try. The problem isn’t a lack of effort. It’s that no one has ever taught them the social skills that help friendships grow over time.

That can be incredibly frustrating as a parent because from your perspective, your child is a wonderful kid. You know how much they have to offer, so it’s painful to watch them come home disappointed again and again, wondering why friendships seem to come so much easier to everyone else.

The good news is that social skills can be learned, practiced, and strengthened over time.

Understanding why your child is struggling is often the first step toward helping them build the kinds of friendships they’re looking for.

Graduate Spotlight: Congratulations, Carly! 🎓

Carly is one of our Simply Social Kids graduates, and we are so pleased to highlight all of her accomplishments!

Carly graduated from Shawsheen Tech High School this spring, and this fall she's headed to Westfield State University to study Early Education. She was accepted into all six colleges she applied to, and she'll be joining Westfield's Learning Disabilities Program, which she's especially excited about.

Her list of accomplishments is long. She's CNA certified through her school's Health Assisting Shop, she's on the SkillsUSA Leadership Team, and she worked as a Teacher's Assistant at KinderCare for her co-op. She's also managed to fit in babysitting twins, teaching swim lessons, working as a Party Pro at Cowabunga's, and serving as team manager for her school's tennis team, all while making Honor Roll or High Honors for all four years of high school. She dances eight classes a week at her studio and competes with their team, and she's hoping to join the dance company when she gets to Westfield. She also received a local scholarship recognizing her commitment to pursuing a career in Education.

In her mom Suzanne's words:
"Overall, she has come so far. While she still has a few challenges here and there, she has truly succeeded at everything she has put her mind to, and we are incredibly proud of her."

We are so thrilled to see that Carly has chosen a career where she will use her caring nature to guide kids to become amazing adults! Congratulations to Carly and all her accomplishments!

My son Trent turns 27 this year.

When Megan was born, we had no idea what our future would look like. Two years later, Trent came into our lives, and from the very beginning, the two of them shared something special.

Over the years, he has been so much more than a brother. He's been her teacher, her protector, her biggest supporter, and the person who understands her better than almost anyone else. Soon, she'll stand beside him as his groomswoman, a role that couldn't be more fitting.

Watching their relationship grow has been one of the greatest gifts of my life.

I wrote more about their incredible bond, the journey our family has taken, and why today means so much to me.
