Harry Stewart Jr. fought for a country that did not always fight for him.
At just 18 years old, he became one of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen—the first Black military pilots in U.S. Army Air Forces history.
During World War II, Stewart flew 43 combat missions with the famed 332nd Fighter Group, better known as the Red Tails. On one remarkable day in 1945, he shot down three enemy aircraft, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary courage and skill. His success helped prove what prejudice had long denied: excellence has no color.
Yet when the war ended, Stewart returned to an America still shaped by segregation and discrimination. After risking everything overseas, he came home to barriers no military victory could erase.
He refused to let those barriers define him. Stewart built a successful career as an engineer, inspired generations through his example, and dedicated decades to preserving the history of the Tuskegee Airmen so their legacy would never fade. His quiet dignity became as powerful as his wartime service.
On February 2, 2025, Harry Stewart Jr. passed away at the age of 100, one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen. He left behind more than medals—he left proof that courage can change history, and that perseverance can outlast prejudice.
Harry Stewart Jr. completed his final mission. The Red Tails may have lost another pilot, but his legacy continues to soar wherever courage is measured not by the color of a uniform—or the color of a person’s skin—but by the strength of their character.
