The Aztec emperor Moctezuma kept a zoo unlike anything that had ever existed: jaguars, eagles, serpents, creatures that blurred the line between animal and deity. Mexican artist and polymath Christian Poire Christian Poiré / Artista & Polimata spent over a decade inside that imaginary, and the result is Del Zoológico de Moctezuma.

These paintings don’t document history. They inhabit it. Lush, strange, and unmistakably alive, Poire’s work pulls a Mesoamerican world back into the room with you.

Every time I’m in SF, I make time for lunch here. Little Vine has been quietly doing its thing since 2011. Natural wines. Beautiful provisions. Cheese and cured meats sliced to order, right in front of you.
They also do a sandwich. One sandwich and gone when it’s gone. Tuesday is pastrami day. The kind of simple thing that makes everything else feel like it was trying too hard. Some places just know what they are. Little Vine is one of them.

I became aware of art in 1984.

My parents were emerging collectors, inspired by Hunk and Moo Anderson, acquiring prints by Francis and Lobdell, ceramics by Gilhooly. I watched their process with mild, passive appreciation. And then the summer of ‘84, we went to LA for the art preceding the Olympic games, and something shifted.

The Hockney pool posters were everywhere. And I noticed.

Because he had captured my entire summer in a single image. Hours in the pool playing mermaid games, choreographing our interpretations of synchronized swimming. The sun off the water. The burn of chlorine. A plate of watermelon next to a woven lounge chair, a damp towel, my dad’s transistor radio carrying the baseball game across the yard.

I was 12. I didn’t have the language for what I was feeling. But Hockney did.

That moment, the recognition that an artist could hold your own life back to you and make it glow, is what drives everything I collect, everything I curate, every room I walk into hoping to feel it again.

Thank you, Mr. Hockney. You started something.

Siluetas Simultáneas — Maria A. Guzmán Capron’s third solo show with Nazarian / Curcio, on view April 11 – May 16.

Guzmán Capron hand-dyes and paints every textile herself, constructing figures that act as both bodies and shields — abstracted forms that wrap around more recognizable ones, blurring the line between concealment and revelation.

The work asks what it means to hold multiple selves at once: protected yet visible, abstract yet deeply personal. Identity not as something fixed, but always unfolding. 🌀🧵

A Passing Shadow and a Vanishing Cloud — new paintings by Avital Burg, now on view at Nazarian / Curcio.

Burg gathers wildflowers, weeds, and branches from Brooklyn’s streets and paints them repeatedly over time — capturing subtle shifts in color and form as they slowly change. The result: still lifes that hold time itself within the canvas.

The show’s title comes from a Jewish High Holiday poem on human impermanence — “like a passing shadow and a vanishing cloud” — and the paintings live in that same quiet meditation on what’s fleeting.
