For those who don't know me yet, I'm Elizabeth Sullivan, founder of Heart of the Matter School of Music (my private lesson music school) here in Tucson. I grew up in Upstate New York and spent most of my life in New York City, where I played in bands, performed, and built a career teaching music across schools, studios, and community programs, including roles at Teachers College, Columbia University, the New York City Department of Education, and School of Rock, where I served as Program Director & Musical Instructor. I hold a Master of Arts in Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University (summa cm laude) and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from CUNY Hunter College (magna cm laude).
Three years ago I brought that experience out to the desert, and I've been so grateful for the community I've found here. I teach voice, piano, guitar, bass, drums, and violin across jazz, blues, soul, pop/rock, and classical styles, and work with students on theory, composition, and improvisation alongside their instrument of choice.
At the heart of it all is a simple belief: music is connection. Every lesson is built around the individual student, meeting them where they are and helping them find their own voice as a musician. It's why the butterfly is the central image of Heart of the Matter. Learning an instrument is more than picking up a creative tool, it's a transformational journey, note by note.
