The West Valley Ovarian Cancer Alliance (WVOCA) held its 12th Annual Teal Ribbon Golf Tournament in Sun City, AZ last Thursday. Principal Investigator Dr. Cynthia Thomson gave a study update and our coaches accepted a $15,000 check to the UA Cancer Center. We love attending the tournament every year and we are so grateful for the generosity, hard work, and support of the WVOCA in supporting ovarian cancer research and the LIvES Study!

As many of you know, September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. As September comes to a close, the LIvES team wanted to take a moment to thank our participants!
Our team is appreciative of all our participants’ efforts towards research, what they teach us through our calls together, and their advocacy in their daily lives. Here at LIvES, we remain dedicated to research to improve ovarian cancer survivorship. LIvES has enrolled 1,205 women since the trial began in 2012. We look forward to September of 2020, where we hope to be able to announce the completion and results of the LIvES!
Did you know? President Obama declared September as National Ovarian Cancer Awareness month in 2015. President Obama’s mother passed from ovarian cancer in 1995, at 52 years old. We are so proud of Sophia, our graduate research assistant, who presented her pilot study looking at the acceptability of lifestyle behavior text messages to survivors and their caregivers. She graduates with her Master’s in Public Health this May.

Even though it rained, there were still an amazing turnout of attendees. We are so grateful to the West Valley Ovarian Cancer Alliance for their continued support of the LIvES trial. The funds this annual event raises helps support the student coaching staff.

2019 donation to support a large ovarian cancer lifestyle clinical trial. Do diet and activity level extend a remission? The trial has closed to new patients, however we hope data will be shared next year. Once a trial closes to accrual, it continues until the last patient has completed the protocol.

Natasha, a LIvES coach graduate, visited the call center today! She’s currently working as a Program Outreach Manager at the American Lung Association in Dallas, TX. We love visits from our old coaches and especially love seeing how much LIvES continues to influence them even after they graduated.

We got a wonderful surprise visit from two of our former LIvES coaches Loretta and Alyssa! Alyssa is now a full-fledge dietitian and will be going to Africa to work with malnourished children. Loretta is studying for her dietitian exam and will be looking to join the workforce soon. We are so excited for them!

The LIvES Study is grateful for the support of the West Valley Ovarian Cancer Alliance. The 10th Annual Teal Ribbon Golf Tournament in February raised $15,000. Not only does it raise money but it also raises awareness in the community. You can visit their page to learn more about this organization: www.westvalleyoca.org

Everyone's schedules are very different this semester so we did an after hours gathering including a game of Scientific Pictionary! Words including activity monitor, principal investigator and randomized controlled trial. What can we say--we love research! 😊
