- Value 6: Alleviate Food and Home Insecurity on Campus
This value is self explanatory. Students should never have to worry about having a roof over their head or food on the table. Students have so much to worry as is with their personal and academic lives. The University should be there to help them when it comes to what they need. Thankfully, Campus Pantry is available and there to help students, but we must continue to keep it open. We must also be sure that the University is the one providing these resources to students. The Pantry relies on student donations, and if students are capable, that’s great. However, I believe the administration should be accountable for the Pantry and its funding and food it has. It shouldn’t be up to the students. It should be a Pantry made for students, not a Pantry that’s only able to run off of other students. ALL students should and must be looked out for.
•
Another resource the University has helped to bring about during the pandemic has been the Covid-19 emergency fund. This has helped students, especially with food and rent payments for their housing. I have an issue with this, however, as others I’ve spoken with also do. Why wasn’t there an emergency fund before? Why isn’t there a permanent fund or funds to help students with housing and food insecurity? This must be changed.
•
As your student body senator, I won’t be afraid in confronting the administration with your student concerns and needs. Your voices, concerns, and needs are important and MUST be heard. And change must then be done to help the student body in whatever ways they need to help them succeed. We have to work together to do this, so let’s do this.
Let’s make it happen. Together.

- Value 5: Sustainable Action Plans
Sustainable action plans must continue to be made at UArizona. We must also promote the current programs and funding we have to make UArizona more sustainable like Students for Sustainability, the Green Fund, and Green Guides. Awareness of these programs for students is important, and so is funding for them.
•
As someone involved in Students for Sustainability, I know we have been wanting and working to pass and implement a fee for UArizona students which would be included in everyone’s tuition. If you’re going to pay tuition and extra fees for helpful resources, why not help contribute to UArizona and their sustainable initiatives than with this fee included within your tuition? Together, we can make this sustainability fee, more awareness to the programs, and funding to these organizations possible and doable for all of us.
Let’s make it happen. Together.

After the Senate debate taking place last night, let’s continue on with the values and goals we all have!
- Value 4: Publicize Awareness for Mental Health and Chronic Conditions
As we all know with the pandemic, struggles with mental health have increased as we’ve been isolated from those we care about, places we want to go, memories we wanted to make, etc. UArizona has done well as of recently to promote their mental health service like CAPS and Wildcats RISE. This also goes to say they’ve done well with accommodating those with chronic conditions, as they’re typically very high risk in regard to the virus.
•
What I wonder though, is what happens when the pandemic is over? Will UArizona continue to supply as much funding for health services as they have been the past year? Will they be as accommodating to those with chronic conditions? It’s scary to think they won’t— because they weren’t before the pandemic started.
•
I believe that individuals who need help and resources for their mental health and/or chronic condition(s), should always have those resources available to them. Not only during the pandemic when there was more light on it, but after the pandemic as well. These individuals want to succeed, but if they don’t have the help they need, or the resources they need to help accommodate them, that isn’t possible, or is VERY difficult to do so.
•
As your student body senator, I would listen to understand the voices of you all and fight for what you all want and need. Action is important, and that’s what I can promise to deliver. We can do it, but we must work together.
So, let’s make it happen. Together.

- Value 3: Diversity and Inclusion
What does student and staff diversity add to the University? It adds strength, power, knowledge, success, and most importantly, IMPROVEMENT. As we all know, diversity isn’t always looked upon favorably and that’s wrong. Diversity is what moves us forward. Everyone’s different experiences, outlooks, opinions, beliefs, identities, struggles, etc. are important and should always be seen as a good way to move forward together in unison towards goals we ALL want to accomplish.
•
Ofcourse, many people, including myself, want this change to be seen, heard, and fixed worldwide, but what we can currently do is start in the ways we know how— at and through our University.
•
Expanding, as well as bringing more awareness, to diverse clubs, cultural centers, and student groups on campus is incredibly important. Nobody should ever feel scared or embarrassed to talk about who they are and their unique thoughts and background— they should be ENCOURAGED to do so. Strengthening these diverse groups will help those who maybe don’t know how to express themselves yet, or just need help knowing that it’s totally okay to.
•
As a first-generation student, a transfer student, a Mexican woman, and a low income student, I know what it’s like to feel left out and think that your ideas don’t matter to those around you. But they do! For some time growing up, I didn’t feel included and accepted by those around me, as I’m sure other students and individuals have felt as well. But you are!
•
No matter your age, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, marital status, income level, academic status, etc. — you should know that what makes you different than others around you is what makes you VITAL. All voices are important, valued, and needed. They always should be, and they always will be.
•
Diversity and inclusion needs to be a key value the University of Arizona holds on to, and only continues to grow with. I know I’d make this a strong point as your student body senator.
Let’s make it happen. Together ✊🏼

- Value 2: Accessible Resources
Creating and implementing more accessible and free resources for UA students, regardless of what campus or online campus you’re a part of, is very important. In order for students to succeed, accessible resources need to be available in order to help them academically and financially, but also for their health needs— mentally and physically.
•
Simply being present in class/zoom class sessions is not enough for most students in order to succeed and potentially graduate. There’s so much that goes into the success of a student, and having resources available to those who need them is a key asset to succeeding, navigating University, and accomplishing all they want to- academically or personally.
•
If you also believe that more resources should be implemented and made available to UA students in order to help them throughout their University journey, vote Jiselle for ASUA Student Body Senator.

You all are the reasons the University exists. Without the students, there would be no need for a University. That's why above all else, student concerns are the most important concerns that should be looked after and fought for. As your student body senator, I know I will uplift all of your voices. I will address all student concerns, suggestions, and ideas you tell me about, or I see throughout campus or social media. Your presence matters, and so do your voices. If you want them heard, use your voice to vote Jiselle for your ASUA student body senator.

Hello wonderful UA students! I hope you’re all having a great week. Today, I want to share my platform with you all. I believe that all students should know that they’re valued and feel comfortable with expressing their full selves. I also want to push forward sustainable actions plans for the UA campus and surrounding areas.

Hi everyone! My name is Jiselle Lugo and I'm so happy to announce my candidacy as your student body senator!
•
I first wanted to introduce myself because I don’t want to be a stranger to you all— I want you all to know I am. I’m a first generation college student who transferred to UA from community college nearly two years ago. I’m a junior majoring in law and animal sciences, with a thematic minor in environmental development and communication. My pronouns are she/her, I’m a proud Mexicana, and I love the UA and all of its students.
•
For the last two years, I’ve been a part of many clubs, student organizations, and programs on campus. This has shown me a lot about what students want, need, and are concerned about. I plan on uplifting all of your voices so that every issue you want addressed can be heard. I’m so excited to share my platform with you all in the following weeks, because I’m not running for myself, but for you all. I’m running to help create the positive change that UA students are looking for. These aren’t just my values, but the values of students. Students like you.
•
I’m running for all of you, and all that UA students want and stand for. Your concerns and needs matter to me. They’re so valued, and I hope we can make each and every one heard. As a team, I know we can do it.
