I remember 20 years ago sitting at the firehouse kitchen table as a brand new firefighter listening to the crew criticize a firefighter from another shift. He made a mistake on a call that, looking back now didn't deserve the attention it was getting. All were participating in the verbal beat down, but the senior firefighter and myself. I kept looking up at the senior firefighter, thinking he was about to get in on the bashing and just waiting for his opportunity.

The conversation took a break, and the senior firefighter looked up and said, "Thank God we’re all so perfect." That's all he said, and that's all that was said about the firefighter who was nowhere near to defend himself. I took that lesson to heart, and it has stuck with me ever since. The senior guy showed more courage at that moment than most guys who deliver such bashings will show in a career. The moral of the story is that what we tolerate, we permit to exist. We have to get better as a fire service supporting each other rather than waiting for an opportunity to criticize. Criticizing another to elevate oneself is nothing more than cowardice.
