Today was so special. 💕
A huge thank you to Sheltering Arms for allowing Learn & Play with Ms. Shay to host our Mother’s Day Diaper Giveaway. We are so grateful for the opportunity to love on families in the community in such a meaningful way.
As a mom myself, I know diapers are not just a small necessity — they are a major expense for many families. Something as simple as a pack of diapers can bring relief, comfort, and support to a parent trying their best each day.
Seeing families smile today reminded me why community matters so much. Thank you to every mama who came, every family who trusted us, and everyone who helped make this possible. 💐
At Learn & Play with Ms. Shay, we believe in supporting the whole family — not just children in the classroom or camps, but families in real life. Today was filled with kindness, connection, and love, and I’m truly thankful. ❤️

Some children are not “too active” or “not listening” - they are trying to regulate their body the only way they know how.
When a child constantly moves, climbs, spins or struggles to sit still, it can be a sign of unmet sensory needs. Movement is not the problem. For many children, movement is what helps them feel calm, focused and in control.
When this is misunderstood, children are often told to “sit still” or seen as disruptive. But taking movement away can actually make things harder - leading to more frustration, poor focus and unsettled behaviour.
When we understand sensory needs, we stop seeing behaviour as defiance and start seeing what the child actually needs. That shift changes everything - for the child and for the adult supporting them.

Love this!
Longitudinal studies consistently show that shared read-aloud time in early childhood is one of the strongest predictors of later literacy and academic success.
Research published in Developmental Psychology and Child Development demonstrates that children who experience frequent, high-quality read-alouds enter school with stronger vocabulary, narrative comprehension, and phonological awareness, even when socioeconomic factors are controlled.
At the same time, population-level data show that this protective practice is declining. National Household Education Surveys from the National Center for Education Statistics indicate that the percentage of four-year-olds read to daily by a family member dropped from roughly sixty percent in the early 2000s to closer to fifty percent by the mid-2010s. That decline has continued to be a concern in subsequent reporting, particularly among families under greater time and economic pressure.
This matters because read-alouds do more than support literacy. They strengthen attention, working memory, and sustained engagement by requiring children to hold information in mind, follow narrative structure, and remain regulated in shared focus with an adult. They also strengthen the caregiver-child relationship. That sense of safety and connection lowers stress, supports emotional regulation, and increases a child’s willingness to engage, persist, and learn.
Learning does not happen separate from relationship. It depends on it. ❤
