FAQ: Do students who have been in private or public school transition well to homeschooling by participating in the Academy, and do students who participate in the Academy transition well to public and private schools?

Most definitely yes. We have had several students in both categories, and they both transition very well because of the quality of education, classroom environment, and requirements of the Academy. We have public school teachers and tutors comment on what wonderful writers we produce in our classes.

FAQ: Do you make accommodations and adaptations for special needs students?

Most certainly! Individual directors are equipped to make needed adaptations such as taking a test at home, reduction of reading material or dictation of writing assignments by parents. The goal of the Academy is to provide every child with a quality education.

Why is your program called “eclectic”?

"Eclectic” means using the BEST of a variety of methods, teaching philosophies and techniques. Most children do not benefit or learn as much when they are forced to learn through one method alone. That is why Jill Dixon has incorporated the following educational philosophies into my program:

1. The Classical Method – The Academy uses the great works of World and Classical literature to teach literary skills and Greek and Latin roots to enhance vocabulary. Students are also taught to use the knowledge they have attained through the use of critical thinking, speaking and writing.

2. Unit Studies – Since it is a proven educational fact that students learn material much easier when it is related, we teach the language arts, history, geography and art as a unit of study, meaning we write and read about what we are studying in history and geography.

3. Charlotte Mason Approach – The Academy firmly believes that “living books” are the best teachers. Students read many “living books” throughout their educational years at the Academy and learn to take dictation and give narration concerning the literature they are reading. Students also create a “Century Timeline Book” of history, so that they get the “big picture” of history.

4. Multi-Intelligence or Learning Styles Theory – Due to Mrs. Dixon's 27 years of learning styles research, it is no doubt that learning styles play a large part in this program. It is a proven fact that students learn best and enjoy learning more if they can learn through their modalities of learning. Therefore, students are given continual opportunity to learn new material in a variety of ways that appeal to them and encourage them to love learning.

5. Traditional textbooks – A few excellent and traditional textbooks are also used when they are the best means of teaching a particular subject.

6. Core Knowledge – Core knowledge is a research-based program that insists that a core of knowledge in specific subjects is necessary to ensure an adequate education. The Academy utilizes this core of knowledge in history, geography, English and World Literature and the English language.

What Makes EAL Different?

EAL is not just a weekly class where students come and get their homework graded. The main purpose of EAL is to teach children how to learn and to solidify learning of what they have worked on at home all week. This is done through using all learning styles in class through movements, visual presentations, listening to music or recitations, games, play acting, drawing, etc.

Other characteristics that differentiate the class from other classes:

1. Curriculum and methods are directed towards special needs learners also. Adaptations are made for these learners, and they are welcome to our class.

2. SAT/ACT prep begins as early as 4th grade. Students in grades 9-12 do SAT/ACT activities weekly.

3. Test taking study skills are introduced in 4th grade. Students will take required tests for mastery in several subjects.

4. Several proven educational philosophies and methods are incorporated into the class instead of just one.

5. Students are able to choose activities that appeal to their individual learning styles so that they can retain information and truly learn.

6. Students who complete four years of the high school curriculum are thoroughly prepared to take AP and CLEP exams for college credit.

7. The Eclectic Academy of Learning covers all necessary language arts (except spelling and handwriting), humanities, and geography skills required for a college preparatory curriculum.

8. Most of the class time is spent in activities, role playing, presentations, music, games, and art to solidify the work done at home. History topics come alive through presentation and bi-annual live history celebrations that students create. Family and friends are invited to attend these memorable events.

9. Parents are not required to stay with their students.
