Kingfisher Academy

I have finally found a place that accepts textbooks--Books for Africa! Many US schools have gone to "books on the computer screen--something Kingfisher never did. We liked the smell of the books, turning the pages, going back in the book to remember stuff, etc. Computer books are cheaper, but a million times less satisfying to me. Anyway, in Africa, apparently the need is great for good solid textbooks, and I am delivering tons of them to the warehouse in Cobb County. This meets my mission of trying to recycle everything that is left from the school. I sold furniture to pay for the re pairs on the bus back in the spring and I sold school supplies (and donated a lot of them). Now, finally the textbooks (which weight about 8 pounds apiece) will be out of my house and I can concentrate on the science equipment. Still have two magnifying scopes to sell and many boxes of science themed material.

Today I was consulting with the owner of a new school in South Fulton and we met in East Atlanta in the bakery behind 6 Feet Under. Afterward I drove all over East Atlanta, visiting places that Kingfisher rented and visited and shared meals. It was not only heartwarming, it was very nostalgic for me. I had almost forgot about when we were a city kids kind of school.

As you all know by now, Kingfisher Academy has closed after 24 years of working with families in the metro area. We are sad, but also looking forward to new possibilities for the staff and for the students. One more photo--here is one class at Kingfisher--showing off their birdhouses of beauty. The game plan is to get those up on a decorated pole before the end of the fall, so we'll be ready for bird nesting in January--surprisingly, some birds begin early.

We are working on a state grant right now through the EANS Act and this is time-consuming and hard--today we took a break to think about creative projects for next week--maybe some new signs or some outdoor space projects to do on the porch. Grant work is hard on the spirit and maybe working with some color will make things more fun. I've already started writing only with green ink, just to make it fun. Anyone else out there working on summer grants? So hard . . . .

We are beginning our summer break, but the office will still be open on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. Hi folks--only two more full weeks till the end of the school year and we are happy and sad to end the year--this has been quite a ride, but we've done it with masks and had only one case of COVID all year--and that was during winter break. I'll begin posting some pictures of all of our activities, but just wanted to remind myself that Facebook is a great way to communicate with past and future friends.

Kingfisher is Growing! We are looking for a full-time teacher for one class and some substitute teachers to fill in on a random basis. The full-time job is 30 to 33 hours a week and requires a degree. The subbing jobs tend to be about one to four times a month for about 8 hours each day. Kingfisher has an excellent Covid record, only one case since we opened face to face learning in August. We mask up all the time and wash hands and have very small classes of ten or less kids. Kingfisher is so busy this winter we are looking for part-time help--light office work, maybe some substitute teaching, a bit of marketing, and generally school-type work.
