Historically, I have maintained that the mixture of fi****ms and intoxication is detrimental. Regardless of one's standpoint, the assertion remains relevant. The Supreme Court has rendered its judgment.

In a unanimous decision, the justices ruled in favor of a Texas man who was prosecuted under a federal law prohibiting habitual drug users from owning guns.

Excellent
Class taken on Mar 8, 2026 Taught by Chuck Norton

I sincerely cannot recommend Chuck Norton highly enough for not providing an excellent class, but for creating an amazingly enjoyable and engaging atmosphere. Throughout the entire class, he managed to continuously uphold the purpose of being a responsible gun owner and how to responsibly view fi****ms; as a tool that you should hope to not use, and only as a last resort after a multitude of de-escalation techniques have been employed. He did an exceptional job demonstrating verbal de-escalation (i.e. being very loud and bringing attention to a situation to ensure you have witnesses if an event takes place), providing examples of how us as individuals may perceive a threat and when one would defer to potentially using fi****ms for defense (e.g. car thief taking your property versus a carjacking with your child in the back). He did an amazing job from the first minute and to the last hour in discussing the mindset one should have when forced to engage someone while using a firearm; utilize the tool to neutralize a threat, never with the intention to kill. In fact, Chuck literally did not ever use the word kill until the last hour, where he read a slide that utilized that word. On top of his qualities as an instructor, he demonstrated through his words, actions, and anecdotes the amazing human being that he is. He is someone who not only takes the job and training seriously, but incorporates that mindset of safety, humility, and caring for the wellbeing of individuals in his everyday life. I am a non-religious person, but I still say that I am blessed to have been educated by such an amazing person, not just an amazing instructor. 11/10 - HIGHLY RECOMMEND

The ATF has updated "unlawful user" make sure and Educate yourself.

⚠️ ATF Just Updated the Definition of “Unlawful User of a Controlled Substance” — Here’s What That Actually Means for Gun Owners

The ATF just released a new rule that changes how the federal government decides who is considered an “unlawful user of drugs” and therefore prohibited from owning or buying fi****ms.

Here’s the simple version:
🔹 Old Rule (Confusing & Overbroad):
Under the old definition, the ATF and FBI could deny a gun purchase if you had:
-A single drug possession conviction in the last year
-One positive drug test
-Or even multiple old arrests, even if you weren’t currently using drugs

Basically, isolated incidents — even from months ago — could be treated as “current drug use.”

This led to background check denials that didn’t match what the law actually intended.

🔹 New Rule (More Accurate to the Law):
The updated definition now focuses on whether a person is currently and regularly using illegal drugs.

The ATF now says a prohibited “unlawful user” must show:
-Ongoing drug use
-Regular patterns of use
-Use that continues into the present

A lawful prescription or one-time event does not make you an unlawful user.

In other words:
A single mistake months ago is no longer automatically treated as “current drug use.”

🔹 Why This Matters to Gun Owners:
-Fewer people will be wrongly denied firearm purchases.
-The rule now matches what courts have already said for years: the government must show current, ongoing unlawful drug use — not just old incidents.
-NICS background checks should become more consistent with the actual law.

This isn’t about expanding prohibited persons. It’s actually ATF pulling back from some of the overly broad interpretations that were causing problems.

🔹 Public Comment Is Open Until June 30, 2026
Gun owners, instructors, and advocates can submit comments on this interim rule.
