This screen is blank on purpose. It represents the space in place of a post I shouldn’t have made. And that’s true. (Maybe some would see it as more of a gray area; but then--that would make the picture appropriate!)

I was trying to gain attention to my channel, so I posted a video I thought might do that of a performance I gave during which someone damaged an instrument, interrupting the piece I was playing with a sickening crash. It may be no surprise what I was thinking when I posted it. Honestly, I wasn’t thinking much about it. But the real question is, why did I LEAVE it up? After the guilt set in, I mean. Because I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I started thinking I shouldn’t have broadcast someone else’s mistake when they probably wished it never happened in the first place.

I think the real reason was, I was feeling pain in my life and wanted to suffer a similar world of pain with others. Misery loves company. I should have just taken it down right away. But I rationalized it, thinking I hadn’t mentioned the city or the venue or the students’ names. You don’t actually see the instrument ruined in the film. And maybe this video would serve as a warning to other young musicians not to leave their instruments on the ground and to watch where they were stepping.

But they were excuses. In reality, I hadn’t asked the teacher for permission to post the recording of the embarrassment. I hadn’t asked the families involved. And I started to imagine how I would feel as a student if I had stepped on my friend’s viola and the guest performer I had come to watch had posted about it. I would feel betrayed! Possibly shamed all over again. And if I was the parent of that student, I think I’d be angry.

So, I took down the post. The moral of the story is, we have to be careful with social media. We might think we’re just being real, but if it’s at the expense of someone else’s mistake, just to get more attention, I can’t live easily with that! With THIS post, I resolve to do better.
