Tomball ISD and the City of Tomball are helping spread the Be SMART message!

BE SMART for our kids!

Tomball ISD joins the City of Tomball and the nationwide Be SMART gun safety campaign in recognizing Aug. 25-29 as SMART Week – spreading the message of secure and responsible gun storage as a way to help prevent gun violence.

One of the smartest things we as adults can do to help keep our children, classrooms, and communities safe from gun violence is to raise awareness about secure gun storage and encourage responsible gun ownership. Here are some simple, SMART action steps gun owners and non-gun owners alike can take to promote safety.

S - Secure all guns in homes and vehicles
M - Model responsible behavior around guns
A - Ask about the presence of unsecured fi****ms in other homes your child visits
R - Recognize the role of guns in su***de
T - Tell your peers to Be SMART.

Please- you own the gun. You are responsible for anyone who is harmed by it.

Talking with children about gun safety is a good precaution, and those conversations should evolve as children grow older. But it is not a guarantee of protection. Children are endlessly curious and exploration is one of the hallmarks of childhood. That is why it is always an adult’s responsibility to prevent unauthorized access to guns, not a child’s responsibility to avoid them.

Find information about how to talk with children and teens about guns and about how to store them securely at besmartforkids.org.

Secure storage saves lives.

Today is the 5th annual National Injury Prevention Day! Be SMART and Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund are proud to partner with Injury Free Coalition for Kids, Safe Kids Worldwide, and other leaders in injury and violence prevention to shine a light on the devastating effects of predictable and preventable injuries.

When guns aren’t properly stored, tragedy can strike – whether it’s a child finding a firearm and injuring or killing themselves, or someone stealing a gun and using it to commit crime. Secure gun storage can prevent both.

Be SMART emphasizes that it's an adult responsibility to keep kids from accessing guns, and that every adult can play a role in keeping kids and communities safer. Learn more about secure firearm storage at besmartforkids.org.

Because a friend posted this, I am posting it, too.
I want to acknowledge National Su***de Prevention Month and urge everyone to recognize the role that guns play such losses. Please Be SMART and securely store guns in your home and vehicles.
If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, please call 988, the national su***de hotline. Help is available. Things will get better.

The shared message is below:

“For all of us who have been touched by mental illness or lost someone to su***de, the pain is real. Even watching someone you love lose their own loved own to su***de is life changing. Being there isn't just words, it is action.....love in action.

Maybe if people's heads weren't buried in the sand of ignorance and they took the time to understand, instead of judging and thinking it won't happen to them because they have the perfect family, life would be a little bit easier for people that do experience this! For family and friends who live under this shadow. The days of 'it' not being talked about or being taboo should be over. In the most difficult moments of life you realize who your true friends are, and the people who really appreciate you. Unfortunately, most social media 'friends' aren't true friends. They will send you a "like" here and there, but in reality they do not take time to read your status if they see it's lengthy. More than half will stop reading right here, or have already scrolled on to the next post on their page. I decided to post this message in support of all those who continue to battle with their mental illness. (Su***de is at an all time high). Now, let's see who will have taken the time to read this lengthy post right through to the end. If you have read everything so far, please "like" it so that I can put a thank you on your page. More mental health awareness is urgently needed. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean people aren't suffering. Please, try to spare a little of your time with someone who may just want to talk (about anything). Talking can help us all to cope a little more, keeping things bottled up just makes it worse. Most people will say, "if you need anything, don't hesitate to call me, I'll be there to help you" but will they? I believe a select few of my friends will post this, to show their support for those who may be struggling. You just have to copy and paste rather than sharing. I'd like to know who will take a minute out of their day to read this all the way to the end and then copy and paste it to their page so that this message can spread and be heard/read by others who need it. If so, please write "done" in the comments. Thank you!❤️

We can make our community safer.

The letter T in Be SMART stands for telling your friends and neighbors to Be SMART. Guns are the leading cause of death for children and teens in the U.S. We can’t afford to stay silent.

This SMART Week and throughout the year, start the conversation. By working together and spreading the word about secure firearm storage, we can create a culture of safety that benefits our children and communities and saves lives.

T is for Tell others to Be SMART.
All Texas school districts are required to provide information about secure gun storage to parents.
Parents, please share this information with grandparents, friends, and neighbors who are not in the school district’s communications system.

This is hard. The sad fact is that most gun-related deaths in the United States are su***des.
Take care and Be SMART.

The letter R in stands for recognizing the role of guns in su***de. Nearly 40 percent of all child gun deaths are by su***de, and many of those are related to momentary decisions. Kids can be impulsive, and one moment of crisis can turn deadly if guns are accessible.

Properly securing and storing fi****ms is particularly effective in preventing gun su***de, especially for children. This is a critical reason sharing this message is vitally important and why we’re asking you to join us during SMART Week. Learn more about the Be SMART program by texting SMART to 644-33.

A is for Ask about the presence of unsecured fi****ms wherever you allow your children to go.

The letter A in Be SMART stands for asking about the presence of unsecured fi****ms in homes your child visits. Asking about fi****ms and how they’re stored is no different than asking about pets, if a child has a peanut allergy, or whether an adult will be home. It’s a legitimate safety concern, and can be as easy as a text or an email.

This SMART Week, as kids head back to school and develop new friendships, make sure secure firearm storage is part of every safety discussion. Learn more about fostering these conversations by texting SMART to 644-33!

A - Ask your family members, friends, and neighbors about the presence of unsecured fi****ms in their homes BEFORE allowing your children to go there.

Even if you don’t own a gun, you have to be concerned about gun safety.

Get the conversation started. You can find information and resources to help you on the SMART Week website.
