The Center for Education in Mass Violence & Su***de educates on targeted violence and su***de prevention, intervention, active response, and recovery.
We offer consultation and trainings at the K-12, college, and workplace level. The University of Toledo Center for Education in Mass Violence and Su***de is dedicated to providing resources, courses, and trainings to K-12 districts, institutions of higher education, and the workplace. With a team of internationally recognized experts, the center is dedicated to providing research-based curriculum
and solutions in a holistic approach. That is, we are not limited solely to threat assessment or prevention alone. We are also dedicated to making universities compliant with House Bill 28, which mandates a multicomponent approach to addressing su***de on college campuses. The Center for Education in Mass Violence and Su***de’s team of experts are highly trained in all aspects of prevention, intervention, active response, and recovery. We are also knowledgeable on how to handle these issues while following the mandates of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The educational materials, courses, and trainings will take your organization or educational institution from preventing incidents of targeted violence and su***de to recovery - should an incident arise. We are also dedicated to assisting the first responder in coping with the trauma that comes with witnessing and/or responding to su***de or mass casualties. We take a holistic approach that encompasses prevention, intervention, active response, and recovery. Prevention takes the form of behavioral threat assessment – creating a climate in which staff members know the warning signs that an individual is at risk of perpetrating a violent act and accurately documenting and storing the data. Intervention involves how to address the student once s/he is deemed a threat in effort to provide mental health assistance and/or disciplinary assistance. Active response occurs in the form of solo engagement for law enforcement, while postvention consists of the steps toward recovery. This workshop will share content that addresses every step with the goal of reducing incidents of targeted violence and subsequent trauma. The effectiveness is being piloted at a local suburban school that fits the demographic of many institutions that suffered such tragedies.
