Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the extraordinary courage of the first responders who showed up without hesitation—running toward danger to rescue, protect, and serve others.

As EMS educators, we hold a special place in our hearts for the firefighters, police officers, EMTs, paramedics, and countless heroes who gave everything that day.

Their courage, sacrifice, and dedication to service will never be forgotten. ❤️🤍💙

We had such a great time presenting our seminar and connecting with fellow EMS educators and professionals who share our passion for strengthening EMS education.

Our presentation focused on effective EMS documentation and practical, real-world strategies educators can use to help providers better understand not just how to document — but why good documentation matters.

One of the best parts of opportunities like this is the conversation, collaboration, and exchange of ideas that happens when EMS professionals come together to learn from one another.

Sitting through a lecture and retaining information are two very different things.

Great EMS education gives students opportunities to think through problems, make decisions, explain their reasoning, and even get things wrong—because that’s where some of the best learning happens.

Try building more active moments into your next class:
🔹 Pause and ask, “What would you do next?”
🔹 Have students defend their treatment decision
🔹 Let small groups work through a challenging scenario
🔹 Discuss why the wrong answers are wrong
🔹 Encourage students to question the “why” behind the protocol

Encourage students to look beyond individual numbers, recognize changes over time, and ask: What’s changing? Why? And what am I going to do about it?

Your students can know the protocol.
They can pass the test.
They can give you the right answer in class.

But can they recall it, apply it, and communicate it when the pressure is on?

Great EMS education goes beyond memorization. Training should create opportunities for students to think, make decisions, make mistakes, and work through the WHY behind their choices.

Because when the real call comes in, there’s no answer key.

It’s one of the easiest questions to ask in the classroom — and one of the least reliable ways to know if learning actually happened.

Instead, ask students to show you.

Give them a scenario. Ask them to explain their decision. Have them demonstrate the skill. Let them work through the problem.

Because in EMS, knowing the answer isn’t enough — they need to be able to apply it when it matters.
