With heavy hearts, we share that our precious Cancer Fit Kid, Zelaya Guevara passed away Sunday morning, May 17th, 2026, after a three-year battle with pediatric brain cancer (glioma).

Zelaya was an inspiration to so many, from us here at Cancer Fit, to the people of Puerto Rico. Even during her own difficult times, she continued to show up selflessly and with a smile. No matter what, she always put others first, even giving her wish up to help the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico at only 8 years old. She was, and will continue to be exactly what her name means, a beautiful light.

This is an unimaginable loss to her family, and ours. Zelaya, we love you so much, and will continue to be guided by your beautiful light.

Zelaya’s family appreciates well wishes, and condolences. Please understand that if you do reach out, her family may not respond right away as they continue to navigate through this difficult time.

Cancer Fit has set up a Memorial Fund to help with:
- the costs of a Celebration of Life
- living expenses for Charlie and the girls over the next few months

For the past 10 years, they have stood beside Cancer Fit in support of pediatric cancer families — and for the past two years, they have committed to being a dedicated monthly supporter. Because of their generosity, two pediatric cancer warrior families are supported every single month. 💛🎗️

Located in Westlake Village, Daily Breath Pilates is a privately owned studio teaching traditional Pilates and so much more. Their welcoming, supportive environment reflects their belief in meeting clients exactly where they are and helping them build strength from the inside out.

Their generosity goes even further — Daily Breath Pilates donated a dozen cycling bikes to Cancer Fit, allowing us to set them up directly inside our warrior family homes. These bikes provide families with safe, accessible ways to move their bodies, rebuild strength, and support healing right from home. 🚲💛

Beyond their financial and in-kind support, this partnership has created something truly special. Through Daily Breath Pilates, we have built amazing friendships and gained loyal supporters within their studio community. The relationships formed through their space have strengthened our mission and expanded the circle of people who show up for pediatric cancer families month after month. That kind of community is priceless.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

This May we want to acknowledge the importance of mental health for childhood cancer warriors, and their families. Unfortunately, not many recognize that the mental health of these families is just as important as the physical health. Whether you’re a parent dealing with the stress of taking care of your family and your child with cancer, a sibling feeling invisible during an uncertain time where you should be seen and heard, or a patient dealing with the isolating feelings that comes with a cancer diagnosis, we see ALL of you. We here at Cancer Fit want you all to know just how important each of you are, we see the sacrifices you make, and we are here for you.

To the family and friends outside of our community. Please be understanding during these trying times, and offer your support where you can. Childhood cancer is an extremely isolating disease for the whole family, you can help make them feel seen.

Did you Know?

🎗️According to the Pediatric Cancer Research Center, “depression rates among childhood cancer survivors reach as high as 40.8%, significantly more than the 9.6% national average” (Thomas, 2024).

🎗️In that same article, they mention “a cross-sectional study looking at nearly 5,000 families who care for children diagnosed with cancers. The study found that the probabilities of one or both parents requiring healthcare visits for anxiety, depression or other mental health-related issues was statistically higher than the probabilities for families of children without cancers” (Thomas, 2024).

🎗️In 2022 the Journal of Pediatrics published a systematic review and found that siblings of children with chronic illnesses or disabilities were more likely to have symptoms of depression (SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, 2023)

Although we’ve been a little quiet lately, we currently provide over a dozen active monthly scholarships to our pediatric cancer families. Behind the scenes, we simply don’t have the manpower to keep up with everything — and we need your help.

We have two immediate remote volunteer openings:

✨𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫
Coordinate fundraising events, assist with building donor relationships, and support campaign strategy. Some experience required.

✨ 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫
Research and write grant proposals to help secure critical funding for our programs. Experience required.
