I drove by a cemetery today and saw lots of colorful mylar balloons and flowers dotting the landscape of the cemetery. It made me think, these objects have no permanence. The balloons will pop or blow away. The flowers will eventually die. Over the years., I've seen some gravestones that have statues and toys laid at its base. I remembered the first time I visited a Jewish cemetery. I didn't see balloons or flowers. I saw piles of rocks on the gravestones. I loved this tradition. A rock isn't going to deteriorate over time. It's going to stay there unchanging throughout the years (as long as no one moves it).
Do you have any traditions for visiting the gravestones of your family? If so, please let me know in the comments.
