Turning the Bruckner Expressway underpass into the Soundview Market Place — now launched as Soundview Economic Hub. The height ranges from 9' 2" to 8' 4"

Help us design a community market under the Bruckner Expressway! We need help reimagining this space as a PLACE where people can gather socially and interact in a marketplace environment! Prepared food vendors, farmers markets, flea markets, recreation- if you can imagine it we'd like to see it! BACKGROUND:
The Soundview Neighborhood of the South Bronx is bound on three sides by the Sheridan, Bruc

kner and Cross Bronx Expressways. The Bruckner Expressway physically bars the community to the north from the community to the south, and the crossing at Bronx River Ave is only one of THREE intersections that bridge the two communities. The neighborhood has a rich culture and history despite being underserved by public gathering space and access to fresh food. YMPJ and partner organizations identified the underpass at the Bruckner and Bronx River Ave as an ideal location to create a community marketplace. In March 2017, we will begin raising awareness of this space through temporary mural art installations- over the next two years the DOT will be repairing the underpass to ensure safety for visitors, and then the market can be built! NEEDS:
The space under the Bruckner needs LIGHT, SPATIAL/URBAN DESIGN of the marketplace itself, and SAFETY & ACCESSIBILITY ADAPTATIONS to and from the site. Assets of the area include schools, residential areas, the Bronx River and other adjacent economic investments. THE COMPETITION:
We are seeking creative renderings of what the space could look like. Selected design submissions will be printed on canvas and displayed along the underpass fence to raise awareness of the space! Painted murals will also be hung on the fence. Submissions will be considered in three categories:
> URBAN DESIGN (how can the space accommodate public gathering/recreation and a food/goods market? Includes landscape/vegetation!)
> SAFETY & ACCESSIBILITY (how can we ensure that people are safe when crossing a very busy on/off ramp, how can entrances be visible and inviting?)
> CREATIVE EXPRESSION (how should the underpass structure be decorated? Looking for Culture, Color, Message- be thoughtful and fun!)

Please save as a PDF! Selected submissions will be paid a commission fee, and works will be displayed along the underpass fence to raise awareness of the space! Selected artists will be recognized by Assemblyman Crespo and other City officials!! Be a player in the rich environmental justice history in the Soundview Neighborhood! SPECIFICS:
Please look through the attached photographs and presentations for a more detailed background. The Underpass is made up of three bays, one behind the other, each measuring 75' X 100' (7,500 sq ft) for a total of 22,500 sq ft.

Cuomo’s $700 Million Plan to Replace Bronx’s Sheridan Expressway Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo endorsed a plan to tear down the expressway built by Robert Moses and replace it with a tree-lined boulevard that could stitch the community back together.
