Have you ever thought about the science behind positive affirmations?
God created our minds with the amazing ability to change, adapt, and form new connections throughout our lives. This is called neuroplasticity.
Through repetition and practice, our brains can strengthen certain thought patterns and responses. Practice makes permanent.
Sounds a little familiar, doesn't it?
Practicing positive affirmations can help us challenge unhelpful thought patterns and become more intentional about how we think and respond.
I'll be honest, I used to be skeptical of positive affirmations. And while I believe they can be a helpful tool, we also need to use discernment in choosing the words we speak over ourselves.
There is a difference between speaking biblical truth over our lives and turning our focus toward self-worship. Our confidence isn't rooted in ourselves, but in who God is and who He created us to be.
God calls us to renew our minds, and practicing biblical affirmations can be a wonderful addition to prayer and reading His Word.
More specifically, this can be a valuable tool during pregnancy as you prepare for birth.
If your mind's first response to the thought of childbirth is fear or an expectation of suffering, intentionally practicing truth-filled affirmations can help you challenge those automatic responses and develop a more grounded, hopeful perspective toward birth.
This doesn't mean pretending birth won't be intense or that everything will go according to plan. It means preparing your mind to respond with truth rather than fear, remembering that God is with you through every part of the journey.
Romans 12:2 (NIV)
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
