The Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MTESOL) program at ASU equips you to teach English anywhere in the world, on your terms. The 30-credit-hour degree can be completed via ASU Online or on ASU’s beautiful Tempe campus and is available in an accelerated format for students in our BA English (linguistics) program.
The curriculum empowers students with scholarly and professional knowledge in four core areas: language, learning, teaching and research. But: “It’s not just about teaching English,” says program alumnus Narin Loa, Ph.D. (MTESOL ’19), “It’s about understanding multilingualism, thinking about the role of English in global contexts and creating learning environments where students feel encouraged and respected.”

CoLang team (Saki Gejo, Tyler Peterson, and Shahar Shirtz) win the President's Award for working on real-world solutions!
Held in summer 2024, The Collaborative Language Institute brought the world’s leading Indigenous language activists, community scholars, students and academics to ASU to provide training in language documentation, preservation and collaborative practices.
The event was co-hosted by Arizona State University and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Fewer than 20 of the nation’s approximately 300 Indigenous languages are being passed down to children, making these languages critically endangered. The event directly addressed this crisis by providing community-centered training in language documentation and revitalization.
