For the parents of a child in a United States federal Indian boarding school, it was like your kids being drafted into a military institution and not knowing if they would come back alive.
The Department of the Interior’s final federal investigation explicitly says many children suffered physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, and its survivor testimonies records people describing sexual abuse themselves or witnessing it happen to other children. The investigation identified 417 federal Indian boarding schools, at least 973 children who died while attending them, and at least 74 marked or unmarked burial sites at 65 schools.
