Our Fast and Furious Fluency Sessions have been a whole lot of fun for the adults and the kids! Getting hyped up and motivated before we do our final DIBELS assessment for this school year! I want to thank Nurse Reagan, SRO Deputy Townsend, and Jade Adams our 2nd grade Aux teacher for helping with all of them so far! At Tanner We Are All In It Together!!!! Tanner Timbers to the Top! This year at Tanner our focus has been to build our vocabulary! I recently discovered the book The Word Collector by Peter H. Reynolds where a boy named Jerome collects words from books, signs, conversations etc and wants to share them with the world. I was so excited after reading this book! It was exactly the concept I wanted to share with our kids. I also got reacquainted with the kids show Word World on PBS. My kids loved that show when they were little. Now, as a reading specialist, I really appreciate the visuals for each word on the show. This got my creative juices flowing. If you know me you know I LOVE a project. Well the Tanner word walls were born! With the help of 3rd grade teacher, Devon Lynn, we have added hundreds of word “stickers” to our walls for the kids to interact with and read to one another. (Don’t worry Steve Wallace! They aren’t glued on the wall). I also created several tasks for the teachers to use such as scavenger hunts and word sorts that go along with these displays. We even have a Spanish display so our EL students can teach us a little Spanish. The next step is for the art teacher, Allison Burris, and I to teach the kids how to create a calligram/typography vocabulary art piece of their own. They can’t wait for this and ask often when that will happen! This makes my reading heart swell with pride!!! Take a look at a few examples and stay tuned for kid art that will be created soon! Some of our Tanner Timbers got a surprise today just in time for Spring Break. Several students received Just Right Reader Backpacks for extended reading practice at home. Thank you to Dr. Randy Shearouse, Dr. Allison Usery for this opportunity for our families! Each backpack has 6 books chosen for each student according to their reading data. They will receive 2 more sets later. The cool feature is that each book features a QR code that can be scanned to connect to a reading lesson for that book in English and Spanish!
