At some point, parents realize the system is perfectly comfortable asking children to keep struggling quietly.

Some of us were never willing to accept that bargain.

We need more parents willing to be “That Parent.”

The parent who keeps asking the hard questions.
The parent who refuses to be placated.
The parent who demands better- better training, better data, better interventions.

This is very true, and something to consider before you hire an advocate.

I hold COPAA SEAT 1.0 certification, and planning on SEAT 2.0 next year, however, that’s not an “official” licensure.

What I do have is a teaching degree, a teaching license, 8 years of public school teaching experience, 16 years of experience in special education, and a passion to help families.

I have so much empathy for the teachers I sit across at meetings. The job is unbelievably hard with mountains of obstacles that keep them from doing the job they need to do. It’s my job to help families ensure that their child doesn’t get lost in those obstacles. That the district doesn’t say, “it’s good enough”.

As the school year is wrapping up and you’re reflecting on the year wondering, “what just happened?”, maybe we should talk!

I can’t say enough good things about Pradip C Patel InLab at HC. If you have an idea, or need a place to explore that idea——this is where you start! Summer session is starting soon! It’s worth it.

The InLab is the centralized hub for all things related to innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship, and social venturing offered at Hillsborough College.

Through four program areas (Academics, Community Events and Workshops, Veterans entrepreneurial services, and the Research Institute, which is a design thinking center of practice for the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship – NACCE), the InLab@HC provides the community with a rich mixture of high impact advisory services, robust collection of innovative workshops, co-working space, subject matter expert entrepreneurs-in-residence, formal college credit entrepreneurship programs, business funding opportunities, design thinking services, academic research project initiatives, and an array of informal non-credit structured programs.

We help early stage entrepreneurs take action on their business ideas through our three stage model of Educate, Fund, and Mentor.

There are big mixed feelings about this advocate, however, she is spot on for this topic.

When I taught in Wyoming I had an incredible mentor who taught me how to write a solid PLAAFP. Well defined, specific, concrete data. You could pick up one of my students IEP’s and know exactly what they needed.

I moved to Illinois and wrote my first IEP. I was excited to “show off” my skills to this new district. Instead, they deleted half of my present levels. I was told, “you can’t put this in here because then we have to address it”.

I wish I was kidding.

When I come to the table as an advocate, I believe teachers are doing the best they can with what they have.

However, I also know that limitations and work-arounds pushed at the district level are not my clients fault or concern. What matters at the end of the day is the student and their unique needs.

When the present levels, the data, matches the child’s services and accommodations—-we have succeeded!
