🎉 Huge congratulations to our doctoral students Erica Liddil and Angela McKinnon on their recent publication in the Journal of Professional School Counseling!

Their research explores how resilience predicts school counselor leadership even above and beyond factors like caseload, school climate, and socioeconomic context. A timely and important contribution to the field. We are so proud!

Big congratulations to Melanie Medina for passing the National Counselor Examination (NCE). When she graduates in December, she will be a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC)!

Master's student shoutout! Congratulations to school counseling student, Tamara Solum whose proposal "The Accidental School Counselor: Playing my Way Into Purpose" was accepted at BullsXChange. Mark your calendar! This event will be held on March 27th at 5:00pm at USF's College of Education TECO Hall.

🚨 BIG MOMENT FOR FLORIDA SCHOOL COUNSELORS 🚨

The Florida School Counselor Association is proud to share that HB 753 has reached its final House committee stop, marking the last hurdle before a full House vote.

At the same time, the Senate companion, SB 1036, has successfully passed all Senate committees and now awaits consideration on the Senate floor.

This didn’t happen overnight. This milestone reflects years of sustained advocacy.

For years, FSCA has worked behind the scenes — building relationships, meeting with legislators, providing policy expertise, and advocating for a statute that reflects how school counselors are actually trained and evaluated.

These bills:
✔ Align certification with graduate-level preparation
✔ Remove examination barriers unrelated to school counseling practice
✔ Align school counselor evaluations with the Florida School Counseling Standards

We are nearing final consideration in both chambers.

Thank you to our Advocacy & Government Relations committee Co-Chairs and members who have advocated, testified, emailed, called, and shown up throughout this process. This is what organized, strategic advocacy looks like.

Florida’s students deserve school counselors who are trained, certified, and evaluated according to the professional standards that define their work.

Doctoral student highlight! Recently, Counselor Ed Ph.D. student, Erica Liddil presented a poster at the Florida Mental Health Counselors Association's annual conference. We love to see our students showcasing their hard work and research endeavors. Way to go Erica!

Doctoral student highlight! Recently, Counselor Ed Ph.D. student, Cassie D’Addeo was honored in Washington DC as Florida’s School Counselor of the Year for 2025. Cassie serves Manatee County students with passion, purpose and heart and we are proud to highlight the amazing work she does!
