Beyond the Sleep has always been more than a song.

This year, it's becoming something more.

We're joining forces with SRV Theory as we move toward World Narcolepsy Day.

A song. A mission. A community.

Most of you know me because of a guitar player from Texas.

But sometimes music gives you a chance to do something bigger than talk about music.

Beyond the Sleep is the official theme song of Pwn4Pwn... and over the next few weeks, I'm putting the reach of SRV Theory behind it.

A song. A mission. A community.

More soon.

Stevie Ray Vaughan didn’t need a metronome to stay in time.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use one.

There’s a big difference between performing with feel and practicing with structure.

If you’re working on a lick, a metronome can help you slow it down, clean it up, and gradually increase the BPM without letting the timing fall apart.

That’s how speed actually gets built.

Not by rushing.

By earning it.

Years ago, there were times I genuinely thought I was playing great.

Then I’d listen back to a recording after I’d been drinking... and hear how sloppy it actually was.

That’s the strange thing about addiction: your perception can convince you everything is under control.

The recording tells a different story.

It doesn’t care how good you thought you sounded in the moment. It just gives you the truth.

Today, I’m grateful to be able to sit down with a guitar, hear what I’m actually doing, and keep growing with a clear head.

Sometimes the most important thing playback reveals isn’t your tone.

It’s you.

A lot of guitar players stop at the amp when they’re chasing Stevie Ray Vaughan tone.

That’s where the problem starts.

For my setup, I take the line out of my Tone Master Super Reverb, turn the cabinet simulation off, and capture the amp’s preamp section directly into Pro Tools.

Then I’m handling the speaker separately with an impulse response of a JBL E130. And I blend that with the mic’d Super Reverb signal.

That distinction matters.

Because the sound of the AMP and the sound of the RECORDED GUITAR TONE are not the same thing.

Once you understand that, SRV tone stops being a gear-shopping problem and starts becoming a signal-chain problem.

And that’s where things get interesting 🎸
