The establishment of the San Juan del Puerto on Fort George Island was chiefly for the purpose of Christianizing the Timucua-speaking local population. Missions were one of the methods used by Spain in attempting to colonize Florida in the sixteenth century. The Mission of San Juan del Puerto was founded in the late 1500's by the Franciscan Order of friars. While working at this mission around 1600 Father Francisco Pareja prepared a Timucuan dictionary, grammar guide, and several religious books. These are among the only remnants of that language, as missions, such of this one would expose more indigenous people to germs and viruses for which they lacked immunity.
