Let’s talk about Labor Day for a minute…

For Black folks, labor has always meant more than a paycheck. Our history is rooted in forced labor, resilience, and generations of Black people doing the work while fighting to be seen, valued, and protected.

And Black women? We have ALWAYS been working.

Caring for babies. Raising children. Caring for families. Building communities. Doing the work that keeps everybody else going.

So today, I’m thinking about the doulas, childcare workers, teachers, caregivers, mothers, nurses, and community workers whose labor doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves.

Care is labor. Birth work is labor. Community work is labor.

Happy Labor Day to the folks doing the work. ❤️🏾✊🏾

Apparently, I needed ANOTHER advocacy lane. 😂🌱

The past 12 weeks have taken me on a Food Advocate journey, and honestly, it has only reinforced what I already know through my work in maternal health and early childhood:

Everything is connected.

Food access. Nutrition. Maternal health. Early childhood. Community health. Policy.

What happens before birth and in those earliest years matters and families deserve access to the resources they need to thrive.

12 weeks down. One more tool in my advocacy toolbox. 🛠️✨

And y’all already know… I’m not done yet. 💪🏾

Black women deserve the support to breastfeed

BUT……

Black women also deserve to REST.

BLACK BREASTFEEDING WEEK | THE FINAL DAY

We All We Got.

Yes, I want to see more Black women supported in breastfeeding.

But I also want to see Black women rested. Nourished. Heard. Supported.

The work of breastfeeding doesn’t happen in isolation. Somebody needs to bring Mama water. Somebody needs to make sure she eats. Somebody needs to hold the baby while she showers. Somebody needs to tell her, “Go lay down. I got this.”

And this is where I think about the The Nap Ministry and the reminder that rest is sacred.

Because our babies need nourished mothers!

NOT exhausted superheroes.

🖤 Rest is not a reward.
Rest is part of care.

This Black Breastfeeding Week, let’s commit to supporting the whole mother.

We All We Got. And Mama deserves to be included in that “we.”
