🖐️ Word to be Reclaimed: tix̌ačib 🖐️

tix̌ačib means "Nice hands" or "Take care of your hands."

At Grandview Early Learning Center, we often use this phrase to gently remind our friends to use safe, kind, and gentle hands with others. Whether we're playing with friends, helping in the classroom, or exploring new activities, our hands can be used to show respect, care, and kindness.

When a friend needs a reminder to be gentle, you might hear a teacher say tix̌ačib as a positive way to encourage caring behavior.

This week, we invite our friends, families, and staff to practice using tix̌ačib throughout the day as we continue reclaiming and strengthening our language together.

💜 tix̌ačib — Nice hands. Take care of your hands.

GELC Outdoor Classroom and Land-based education: 🌿☀️
Learning is often rooted in the local environment, history, and culture of our community. Our program supports land-based education - learning through nature.
The children engage in outdoor learning centers, which supports child development through meaningful and engaging experiences:
• Children take part in gardening activities where they learn how plants grow and how to care for them.
• Our farmers market area brings meaning to the garden experience by helping children understand where food comes from, encouraging imaginative play, and teaching valuable life skills such as sharing, communication, and responsibility.
• The art area gives children a place to create and express themselves, while the natural instruments help them connect with song and dance in an outdoor setting.
There are several outdoor learning spaces which support children’s creativity, learning through play, problem-solving, social development, and a deeper connection with the land. 🌱🎨🎶💧🍅
We are honored to provide a unique environment where children can discover more of who they are, where they belong, and their connection to nature every day! 💚

This week’s Word to be Reclaimed is gʷəʔušəbic čəxʷ ʔu. — “Please.” 💜

In our daily lives, we use “please” when asking for help, sharing kindly with others, or making respectful requests. In txʷəlšucid, gʷəʔušəbic čəxʷ ʔu also carries a deeper meaning that can be understood as “would you have compassion for me?” — reminding us that kindness, respect, and compassion are woven into the language itself.

We encourage our staff, friends, and families to practice using gʷəʔušəbic čəxʷ ʔu throughout the week during everyday conversations and classroom routines as we continue reclaiming and strengthening txʷəlšucid together. ✨

This week’s Word to be Reclaimed is gʷəƛ̓alad łi — “Stop, you folks.” ✋

As we continue bringing txʷəlšucid into our daily routines, we encourage staff and families to practice using gʷəƛ̓alad łi throughout the week in place of the English phrase “stop.”

Using these words consistently in everyday moments helps our friends build familiarity with the language while supporting ongoing language revitalization efforts. 💜

Today, our GELC team had the opportunity to visit Chief Leschi Schools to participate in their Culture Days celebration! 🎣🐟

Our staff brought a model canoe and fishing net to teach friends about traditional fishing practices through hands-on play and learning. Friends first pretended to be salmon, swimming together into the fishing net. Then, they switched roles and became fishermen, carefully gathering the “salmon” from the net and placing them into the tote.

For the second activity, friends practiced tossing fish into the tote for a fun and engaging game that kept everyone smiling and moving!

Our hands up to Teachers Lenissa and Geoffrey for helping with this event.

Thank you to Chief Leschi Schools for welcoming us to be part of such a meaningful day of culture, learning, and community. 💙
