Today we honor the legacy of the last enslaved African Americans in Texas who were finally informed of their freedom, some two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It was those people, and the generations of Texans who came after them, who made the bold declaration to celebrate this day, marking a reality we know far too well in this country: freedom may be delayed, but it will never be denied.

Though our fight for freedom sadly continues, today we pause to celebrate and embrace the joy of our ancestors who believed in the possibilities of a more promising tomorrow. And in that joy, we remain anchored, steadfast in our pursuit of true freedom and justice for all.

This month, we celebrate the strength, courage, and contributions to the Sorors and allies who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. We recognize that dignity, respect, and the opportunity to live authentically are values that help build stronger communities for everyone.

In the spirit of sisterhood, service, and uplifting others, we stand with those who continue to advocate for equality, inclusion, and love. May we continue to create spaces where every person feels seen, valued, and empowered to be their true selves.
